So my cat Charlie survived his urinary blockage and bladder surgery!  How can I stop this from happening again? He was already on Royal Canin SO dry food except for a brief stint of eating Fancy Feast about a month ago.  I will find out exactly what kind of stones he had in about 2-3 weeks but I'm worried about him blocking again in the meantime.

Tips I've collected so far:

wet food only and add some water

Drinkwell fountain

no fish flavors

distilled water only

try to de-stress his environment but this is hard because I can't bring back his friend Spike who died of cancer 3 weeks ago :(  Going to try Feliway spray.

Any other ideas??

Also does anyone know of any studies that show likelihood of a cat re-blocking?  My vet said since she removed the stones, he should be ok for at least 2 weeks but the internet is saying they can within days?

Also any info on how long these stones generally take to form?

Thanks!!

I think you have everything.  I would suggest using the Feliway diffusers instead of the spray.  That will keep a steady supply of it in the environment.

You could get some pH strips to check his urine.  The pH should stay around 6.5.

Grain free foods can help, there are wet foods that do contain grains.  There is some evidence that grains can raise the pH level in urine.

You can get more specific when you find out the type of stones that your kitty had.

Indeed, as Denice said, it looks like you got everything you need. I just went through the same nightmare...

My kitty is a month out from his bladder surgery (12 stones all together removed) He had a few complications from the surgery afterwards, not related to reblockage, mostly very bad inflammation.(emergency vet visit, home, regular vet the next day, got home 2 days later)

As of right now, he gets wet food 4-5 times a day. He was raised on dry food by his old owners, I kept him on dry but incorporated wet food once a day, it was considered a treat so it was an easy transition to all wet for us. He has two litter boxes now, which I honestly think helps tremendously. He can switch back and forth if he thinks one is too dirty instead of holding it until the box is cleaned. I've become obsessive with scooping them, usually 4 or 5 times a day. I'm ridiculous [emoji]128570[/emoji]

He always fresh water available. Only cold, bottled spring water will do of course, spoiled brat [emoji]128570[/emoji] We do have him on a grain free diet, even when he had dry it was blue buffalo wilderness grain free. But that's not necessarily for every kitty. He's 16 years old, plays like a kitten and we are so lucky he's back to his old self, albeit with a few more grey whiskers.

My vet said his chances of reblockage are pretty slim as long as we keep him hydrated and peeing a lot. His checkup urinalysis was 100% last week so we seem to be doing well. I wish you and your guy the best, he'll be good as new in no time.
