Thank you. That is my Sophie. She is my feline soul mate.

You can also use a detangler spray to help comb out knots. I use this one but you can use whatever kind you want as long as it says that it is safe for cats on the bottle or label.

Does that type work well?  Wurp gets knots on his chest and they are very hard to get out, no matter how much I brush him.

Yes it does. I spray it onto the brush or comb and not on them directly because they do not like that at all. they think it's a squirt bottle.

Wonderful, thank you!   I'll give it a try.  He gets really bad knots, I think it is from him washing his chest.

Hello I'd like to add a few things about the clumps/mats of hair...for our baby we do it all ourselves now Prince who like I said belonged to my late father-in-law...so he had all different kinds of brushes and he was a mess...what works for my boy is a regular human comb...he does not like all of the brushes he came with...and for the mats that get away from me....I cut them out with little scissors but I am EXTREMELY careful on how I do this as it's easy to clip their skin...so obviously you have to see if the mat is far enough away from skin or find a place where you can clip a small section to work it away from...and as @Kat0121 it is important to shave their bum area. ..you do not want to find pieces of poo in your bed or anywhere else because they've attached themselves to the fur...yucky....anyhoo if you start early enough also you can get them used to baths and use cat friendly shampoo and conditioner because they are so fluffy they pick up dirt to...and you can also use a baby toothbrush to wash under chin where their food hardens and crusts....but you must make sure most hair clumps are gone before you wash and....you need to blow dry them on low warm air...it is usually a two person job but one can do it to...although for first time I'd have your husband help that way he can also help keep you calm if you need that...I know I do....because my Prince likes to fuss the whole time I'm grooming him...I hope this helps...I will attach a pik of my boy and the comb I use on him...the pik is after he got combed

I wanted to add to what @imjustacatmom  said above.....don't forget toe hair!  Wurp has hobbit feet, he has inch-long hair sticking out the bottom of his paws.  It catches kitty litter and poo like crazy!  I keep that trimmed up too.  I have to catch old grumpy in just the right relaxed mood to do so, but I try to keep it trimmed up.  I get kitty litter in my bed due to those hairy toes!

@imjustacatmom   I used to have a sectional sofa with that very pattern you have the comb lying on in that picture!

Haha well this is one whole couch...lol...but going with what you said about toe hair...I do not trim Prince's to hair...however when he gets litter stuck to his paws. .boy oh boy is it so much fun to wash his foot...anyhoo about a week ago it wouldn't wash out so I was forced to trim the fur...Princes paws looks like he's Rapunzel or something his fur is so long lolol [emoji]128571[/emoji][emoji]128569[/emoji][emoji]128569[/emoji][emoji]128008[/emoji][emoji]128049[/emoji][emoji]128150[/emoji]

Wurp gets that way, with the Rapunzel toes!  I call them hobbit feet...and he is always sitting around picking stuff out of his toes...I've watched him pull out a piece of kitty litter and spit it across the floor.  It's just much better on us both if I trim it, I have one of those small trimmers for dog paws that is cordless that I use.  If I get him upside down in my lap and rub his belly until he is relaxed and purring, I can sneak the trimmer from the side of the chair and do them one at a time with another rubbing break in between each....I have to do the same to trim his claws, but it works for us.  Either I do that slow process, or I give in and run him to the vet's office if he is being cantankerous with me.  He is all smiles and purrs with them, lets them do whatever to him with no fight.  They think he is an angel cat (yeah, right).  I get him home and he turns his butt to me for the rest of the evening.  But the $7.00 they charge me is often worth it.  They trim the hair and clip his nails, done in 15 minutes.

Ok well, i am a bit scared about the toe hair and the nails. But i sure have to learn. Maybe i will have them groomed at the vet's and watch at first. My daughter (12 yrs ) loves to give them showers and brush their hair. She uses our bath jel and an ordinary comb. Cat poop does get stuck in their feet sometimes and it is so yuckkkkyy yes! So i think its a good idea to cut the hair.

hbunny, I will try to post more pics since you like it. I like it too.

Kat0121 , good idea to use detangler. I will try it.

Imjustacatmom, prince is adorable u r lucky to have him.

You need to provide them an alternative place to scratch/sharpen their claws.  I highly recommend either a cat tree, cat scratching post, or a cardboard "scratcher".  My two boys immediately left furniture alone once provided with plenty of acceptable things to scratch.  It is a need with them to maintain their toenails, not just a behavior.  Mine don't scratch or claw anything in the house other than their scratching trees, posts, and cardboard scratchers.  The cardboard ones are cheap on Amazon.

Yes thank you I am blessed to have both of my furbabies...they bring so much joy...my Siamese Duchess is my ESA (emotional support animal)...while it is cute that your daughter gives them a bath...it really is imperative that you get shampoo and conditioner made for cats...why? Human bath products contain tons of chemicals and who knows what else...your cats will still lick their fur after bath...which when they do that they are licking whatever chemicals are in the product you use...which can make them sick...also please blow dry them when they get baths otherwise they can get sick....long hair cats can take a long time to dry off even if it is hot where you are....while it is awesome that your on here...you can also Google....everything new cat owners should know....or...Google each item you can think of thst you gotten from here and Google it separately to learn why each thing is good for cats...research research research is never wasted time....the more you can inform yourself with...the less surprised you'll be should a situation arise...now I'm not saying you'll be prepared for everything....life is still life and things can unexpectedly happen...there are also several different forums on TCS alone that talk of other issues. ..you are doing an excellent job by reaching out here and other places....soon in no time you'll be able to help other new cat owners!!!! imjustacatmom imjustacatmom u r right about research. I do it whenever someone here gives one of their valuable pieces of advice. It really helps. I must admit that raising a baby has been easier for me lol. But i am more than willing to learn. Poor kitties they would have to put up with me until i do. I wonder how can all the stray cats must be doing out there with no one to care for them.

There is a cat who lives in the street near my house, he looks exactly like mine it seems he was dumped by his owner. After all what i ve learnt here about cats i guess i will try to give him some help even though i cant let him near my cats but the poor thing must be having a difficult time...

@luluwahid you'd be surprised at how resilient cats are...now if along your journey of being a new cat mom...you might find you do want to help out strays...thats how many of us become rescuers fosters and the like...you might want to check and see what's available where you are as far as resources are concerned and you might also want to check your local laws...being a different country I do not know what your laws are...however a bit of cat history...they were first domesticated in Egypt I believe...cats and Egypt go way back...which I'm sure your quite aware of [emoji]128522[/emoji] anyhoo...you are doing great and in no time you'll find its just as easy to be a cat mom...

imjustacatmom imjustacatmom yea sure cats were sacred back then. There are no special laws about cats i believe except if you own a cat (or a pet in general) that is a threat to people or if u practice any animal brutality against them. Here there are thousands of cats in the streets it is very common. There are cats who live in gardens around my block, a cat lives on the roof of the building next door, these r fine coz ppl throw remains of food to them all the time and these cats can actually take care of themselves. But domestic cats which were dumped by their owners r a pitty coz those r helpless and cant make it on their own. U know i always fear that my cats might get out somehow and get lost , i think my elder one is too royal and gentle to live on his own while maybe my little baby is a bit of a survivor and might be able to stay alive .. I wish it may never happen.

lovefive lovefive my aunt is wht u might call a crazy cat lady , she is an adorable old lady who wakes up daily at 6 am and goes to feed stray cats and dogs in the near park. So i might have inherited this from her [emoji]128516[/emoji]

@luluwahid so apparently I was wrong wrong...see this is how a little bit if research will help all of us [emoji]128518[/emoji] ok so it says cats were venerated (sp) in ancient Egypt...now I thought Ancient Egypt was the first to domesticate however according to this Wikipedia account not the case...although I will tell you..when I was in college we were told that Wikipedia is not a reliable source as anyone can go in and edit....hmmmm maybe I shall research more...but if you feel inclined please read

Felis catus domestica (invalid junior synonym[4]

The domestic cat[1][5] (Latin: Felis catus) or the feral cat[5][3] (Latin: Felis silvestris catus) is a small, typically furry, carnivorous. They are often called house catswhen kept as indoor pets or simply cats when there is no need to distinguish them from other felids and felines.[6] Cats are often valued by humans for companionship and for their ability to hunt vermin. There are more than 70 cat breeds; different associations proclaim different numbers according to their standards.

Cats are similar in anatomy to the other felids, with a strong, flexible body, quick reflexes, sharp retractable claws, and teeth adapted to killing small prey. Cat senses fit a crepuscularand predatory ecological niche. Cats can hear sounds too faint or too high in frequency for human ears, such as those made by mice and other small animals. They can see in near darkness. Like most other mammals, cats have poorer color vision and a better sense of smell than humans. Cats, despite being solitary hunters, are a social species and cat communication includes the use of a variety of vocalizations (mewing, purring, trilling, hissing, growling, and grunting), as well as cat pheromones and types of cat-specific body language.[7]

Cats have a high breeding rate. Under controlled breeding, they can be bred and shown as registered pedigree pets, a hobby known as cat fancy. Failure to control the breeding of pet cats by neutering and theabandonment of former household pets has resulted in large numbers of feral catsworldwide, requiring population control.[8]This has contributed, along with habitat destruction and other factors, to the extinction of many bird species. Cats have been known to extirpate a bird species within specific regions and may have contributed to the extinction of isolated island populations.[9] Cats are thought to be primarily, though not solely, responsible for the extinction of 33 species of birds, and the presence of feral and free ranging cats makes some locations unsuitable for attempted species reintroduction in otherwise suitable locations.[10]

Since cats were venerated in ancient Egypt, they were commonly believed to have been domesticated there,[11] but there may have been instances of domestication as early as the Neolithic from around 9,500 years ago (7,500 BC).[12] A genetic study in 2007 concluded that domestic cats are descended from Near Eastern wildcats, having diverged around 8,000 BC in West Asia.[11][13] A 2016 study found that leopard cats were undergoing domestication independently in China around 5,500 BC, though this line of partially domesticated cats leaves no trace in the domesticated populations of today.[14][15]

As of a 2007 study, cats are the second most popular pet in the United States by number of pets owned, behind the first, which isfreshwater fish.[16]
