I am wondering if anyone has tried Hemp Seed Oil on their cats. I have two healthy cats and have no need to use it but I have just recently started giving my tow 30 kilo dogs a very small amount, half a teaspoon, on their meal each night. The recommended dose is 3 teaspoons.

This is a cold pressed virgin product with no THC. In my country, Australia, it is not legal for humans to ingest but can be used topically. There are no laws against using it on animals. I am a law abiding citizen and would not have tried it if there was.

It was out of sheer frustration that I researched and found out about the product. My 9 YO Staffy has always been an itchy scratchy dog who chewed his feet and scratched his ears until he was red raw and bleeding. He has been on vet prescribed medication for years but nothing really worked just calmed the irritation down for a while.

In just two weeks his skin is white, no pink at all. His ears that were dry, flaky and had sores behind them from the continual scratching are beautiful and soft and now pricked higher than I have ever seen them. His paws were hard and scratchy but are now much softer. He has been on the Hemp Oil for about 8 weeks now and he is so much happier and I rarely see him scratch or chew.

My 15 YO  Kelpie/Dalmatian cross has also shown great benefits. Her eyes were very cloudy but are now bright. She has trouble walking on the tiled areas in our home and this is much better now, she had cruiciate ligament surgery down two years ago. She now jumps up on the lounge with ease.

I read about lots of problems with Cats and skin irritations, hot spots etc and out of curiosity would like to hear if anyone has any feedback as I am amazed with the results I have been getting with our dogs.

I don't have any personal experience with this, but I am very interested in what others have to say - my first hunch, after researching medical marijuana for myself, is that it would be perfectly fine as an animal supplement.   I can tell you this - all of my cats really enjoy munching a fan leaf or two

I remember another poster on this site was talking about this product:

https://canna-pet.com/our-products/canna-pet-products/

I'm not surprised that it worked for your dog - on the above site (which is a THC-free product), it talks about dogs' cannabinoid receptors, exactly where they are located what organs are affected.   I think it's a fascinating subject, and if my kitties ever experienced a health issue that conventional medicine failed to treat adequately, it's definitely the kind of thing I would look into.    There's a whole lot of positive reviews out there for these types of products - for both dogs and  cats!

Hi there. My little man Arlo was diagnosed with terminal liver cancer, and I was looking for nutritional and herbal therapies that would be safe for him to prolong his life and quality of life. I used to make him a wet food in the food processor that included many ingredients, and one of those was hemp seed oil. He didn't really like the food I made that much, and his appetite was so low that we wound up dropping the "green slush," as my family called it, and just giving him a pre-packaged food that he liked. But anyway, he ate the food, including the oil, for several weeks with no ill effects. I can't say definitively that it is safe for cats, but I must have read somewhere that it was, because I never would have given it to him without doing my research. I'm not sure about the dosage... you should do some digging online. I'm sure that others have used it in cats and can give you some guidelines. Sorry I can't be more help, but I will say that I have tried it.

Arlo died a year after he was diagnosed and given a month to live. He was my soulmate and I miss him still. :) I don't think it was the hempseed oil that prolonged his life, though... because he didn't take it for long.

Well, supposedly cats can't convert plant based omega-3's into the usable kind (which is found in fish, krill, and greenlipped mussels) so I don't think it'd be amazingly effective. Maybe dogs can convert it better since they're more omnivore. But I don't think it'd hurt, and maybe some of the other fatty acids would still be helpful.

I have been putting hemp seed oil in my morning drink or oatmeal for about a year or so. Hemp seed oil is not the same thing as the Canna-pet stuff mentioned above, there is NO CBD or other cannabinoids that can get you any kind of high. (CBD is the cannabinoid that's supposedly the one that makes you relaxed and chilling out on the couch if you smoke weed, THC is the "head high" cannabinoid that makes you feel creative and/or paranoid depending on your reaction to weed.) I would recommend trying the hemp seed oil you're giving to your pets for yourself. I take 1-2 tablespoons a day (so 3-6 teaspoons), so I'm surprised the recommended dose for a small dog is that high. But maybe it also has to do with how effectively humans vs dogs can convert it?

Thank you @samus! That's really interesting and helpful info. For some reason, I had thought that hempseed oil did contain CBD but did not contain THC. Thanks for clarifying.

My dogs are 30 kilo large dogs which equals 66 pounds (sorry we talk Kilos here in Australia) I give them 2.5 mil which is working a treat.

I have no idea whether it works for cats and that is good information re the Omega-3's, I had no idea.

Thank you for explaining the THC vs CBD. I would never consider using an illegal substance, I'm saying that it is bad to do so I am just a law abiding citizen. We have very strict laws here.
