I just adopted a kitten and the girl who was fostering him was feeding him Royal Canin kitten food. I bought a bag, but I plan to gradually switch him to something better. However, I am running into a problem... I need to find a kitten food without ANY chicken. That seems to be impossible! The reason is that my dog is highly allergic to chicken.. Any at all and he get awful hot spots. I am keeping the kitten's food separated from the dog but stuff happens, and I'm not willing to jeopardize my dogs health. So, any suggestions on chicken free kitten food? I've found some brands of chicken free cat food.. But my kitten is only 9 weeks old. Does it make a difference if it's not specifically for kittens?

Where on the globe are you located?

I like to order online because it's cheaper, and there are search functions for protein/flavor where you can just look for something other than chicken. Generally I would recommend Hound & Gatos or Ziwipeak (because they are free of veggies).

Of course, if you are up to it, the cheaper option is to just go to your local butcher/supermarket and get some meat (there are websites full of information of how to feed a cat with raw meat. You'd have to find sources for organs and edible bones, both of which are on the cheaper side as meats go. General upside is much cleaner teeth, non-smelly poop, happy cat)

Hound & Gatos or Ziwipeak are great options. There are so many food on the market that don't contain any traces of chicken. I once had a cat who couldn't eat chicken. He got novel proteins like venison and rabbit which are at a low allergen level. We fed Nature's Variety Instinct (canned), Ziwipeak's venison canned and freeze dried duck by Stella and Chewy's.
