Hi there!
Over the past few days my cat Ralph has been showing symptoms of a cold. He is sneezing constantly and is breathing very noisily and is having difficulty breathing. He is also very lethargic and is just sitting on the sofa all day (he's normally a reasonably active cat). His eyes are streaming and I'm very worried. I called the emergency vets last night and they essentially told me there wasn't much they could do and not to worry too much as it's just like any human cold/flu and will recover soon enough. However, I am worried. Any advice/insight would be really helpful as I've never experienced this with either of my cats before.

Welcome to The Cat Site, but I'm sorry your little guy isn't feeling well.

To help him breathe, you can get the bathroom good and steamy, then turn off the water and sit with him in the bathroom until the steam dissipates.  This will help break up the congestion in his nose.  You can also use plain saline solution nose drops to help clear his nose.  We use Little Remedies Little Noses drops.  Just one drop in each nostril once or twice a day.  Wipe his eyes with a warm cloth.  Be sure he eats!  That's the most important thing.  Offer him smelly canned food warmed up with either a little bit of warm water so it's the consistency of thick oatmeal, or warm it in the microwave for about 8-10 seconds.  If he stops eating, get him back to the vet immediately.

Thank you very much! I will try and do those things today. He's been okay with eating since last night but if he goes off it at all I will give that a go. Do you know where I can get a bottle of little remedies? Thank you.

I would look at the local drug store..or even grocery store.

Chains like CVS, Rite-Aid, even Target or Walmart should have it.

You should be able to find them at any pharmacy.  At Wal-Mart or Target they might even be in the baby section.

How's he doing today?
