Hi all, I'm a longtime lurker and reader here, but I've never posted before. I hope it's okay to post for the first time in this folder.

I have a Siamese cat, Bijou, who will be 16 in September. I've had her since she was two months old and she has always been an indoor cat. This week she has seemed off. I have a vet appointment later today, but I've been doing a lot of reading and of course, I'm worried about outcomes.

Bijou gets regular checkups. She had one in December and got a clean bill of health. In fact, our vet said her health was exceptional for her age.

She got sick at the end of March and I took her back to the vet, who diagnosed her with a UTI and prescribed antibiotics. She tolerated the antibiotics well and bounced back quickly, but during that time she lost some weight. (She is a small cat. The most she has ever weighed was about 7 pounds.) Frankly, I didn't have her on the best diet. I did a lot of reading and we switched over to completely grain-free food. She and our other cat now get wet food morning and evening and a tiny bit of dry at night, which they pick at, but it usually just sits in the bowl. For about a month I also supplemented Bijou's diet with GNC NOURISHCAT, which I think is gross and she loves, and which gave her an extra 40 or so calories per day. It took a little while, but she did gain her weight back (and her coat has never looked better).

Everything has been pretty normal, but over last weekend I noticed that neither cat was eating as much, which I attributed to heat. We have air conditioning, but during high heat days our apartment doesn't cool off much and I've observed similar behavior during other summers. Yesterday I came home and my husband said Bijou had thrown up twice. I had seen both cats cough up hairballs kind of recently--again, normal for summer shedding--but he says these weren't hairballs. He also said she was sitting and looking at the litter box for a long time, but never went in. I have personally seen her use the litterbox this week, but I'm adding that behavior to the list as strange. She drinks quite a bit of water, and always has, so of course I would be alarmed if she was continuing to drink and not urinating.

I started putting some things together and realized she's been doing some other strange things recently:

- odd vocalizations, only twice, but still strange (she is a very talkative cat, but this kind of sounds like the "in heat" sound that cats make)

- wandering around

- spending a lot of time under the sofa, instead of lying on top of it in her favorite spot

- not running out when food is put down, unless it's the NOURISHCAT

All these things add up to my cat not behaving normally. My vet and I have discussed normal aging process, naturally, but I know from reading here and other places that cats can get very sick very quickly and not show symptoms. Anyway, just looking for moral support and that sort of thing. Thanks for reading and I'm happy to be here. :)

I have an almost 16 year old myself, and he does everything you have described. He was x-rayed and found to have an enlarged heart 2 years ago and has been on lasix since. I had brought him in because he was not eating or drinking much at all, throwing up, and coughing.  He has also always drank a lot, and now pees very large amounts which I assume is because of the lasix. He was checked for diabetes, kidney problems, and thyroid problems and came out fine. I would definitely watch your cat to see how much she urinates, if she isn't much her kidneys could be failing. All her symptoms point to something being wrong, but at her age, like mine, it can mean she is just getting old and declining. We decided to not bring Burt back to the vet anymore, he gets so traumatized I just don't want to put him through it anymore. You'll have to decide too about quantity of life or quality. A simple blood test can give many results, like kidney and liver function so you might want to bring her in and have them check what they can. It might be something as simple as kitty cold's, or like you said the heat, which would cause them to both be off. I would have her checked out one more time, for your peace of mind, and if nothing is found this time, then you'll know you did all you could. I just feel like crying when I think of not having my boy anymore, but now I'm praying that he lives for as long as he can and then goes in his sleep. Whether that is tonight or five years from now, all I can do is tell him how much he is loved and spoil him with his treats and whatever he wants to eat, like an Arby's which is his favorite. Just hold on to that little girl as long as you can, she knows she is loved and that is the most important thing right now in her world. I'll pray for us all, please give her a kiss for me, take care......

Thanks so much for your reply. It is a comfort to know that others are experiencing the same things and there are a lot of very kind and empathetic people here.

It has been a very long time since I've lost a pet--probably the last was a cat we lost about 25 years ago during my teen years--so I'm sad just thinking about anything being wrong with Bijou, even though she's lived a long and comfortable life. My main worry would be any pain, but we'll see what the vet says. She actually really loves him, but the trip there and back has proven to be traumatic for her, so I understand what you mean about deciding not to visit anymore.

Bijou got poked and prodded and examined enough for three cats, but our doctor couldn't find anything physically wrong with her. We will have the blood test results tomorrow. The vet is basically looking at kidney function, which won't surprise anyone here.

As for the rest of her weird behavior, the vet says it's very likely just age-related decline and we should do our best to reassure her and keep her comfortable if she gets agitated. Also, we already know she doesn't see as well as she used to and it's possible she doesn't hear as well either, which would explain her weird low meowing.

Of course at the moment she's perched on her usual spot looking totally normal and she had dinner, so. The vet visit was just peace of mind for me, I guess.

Hello!
I am a new poster as well!
Your topic caught my eye, as I went through some similar issues some years back with my then 12 year old. The nighttime vocalizations were awful. I have read that is a normal sign of cat old age. My girl however had started eating and drinking more, and vomiting more, and began losing weight. End result was hyperthyroidism and the beginnings of renal failure. We juggled with it for 6 years, and she was happy :) Good luck with your baby!

Thanks so much for responding. I'm glad you were able to find a way to manage everything. I hope the same for us if the test results show something similar!

Tests are back and nothing really to be concerned about. fPLI is at the top of the normal range and BUN a little higher, but creatinine and everything else is in normal range.  The vet says we will keep an eye on her, but he doesn't think there's anything wrong that isn't age-related. Thanks again to you guys who posted kind words!

I am concerned about my 19 yr old baby. She does seem to have her off days. She has started to urinate outside her litter box. I think she is just confused & can't see as well as she used to. Tonight I came into feed her & she had pooped in her litter box but also some was on the floor. I got toilet paper to pick it up & it was black. I'm worried now she might be bleeding internally. She eats really good. She lost weight for awhile but has gained it all back. She still cleans herself & she has arthritis , but I got a treatment to put in her food & she is much better. She jumps on the bed and her tree stand by the window.
I know I can't have a lot of time left with her, but I can't stand the thought of losing her. I've never had a cat this long. I love her so much. She sleeps on her pillow on the bed.
