Just yesterday I found a sick little stray kitten. I moved to Los Angeles a few years ago and it's truly heart breaking how many stray animals are here.

He was maybe 7 weeks old, really little, right off the bat I could tell he was too skinny and he had pretty bad mange. I brought him inside and got him setup with some food (ate a lot) and some water (also drank) . Gave him a quick bath and got him setup in a box with a blanket. This morning before I even got a chance to bring the little guy into the vet he had passed away.

He never bit me and I don't think he scratched me, but during his short time with me I did clean up his box (some poo and pee) and I have some burns (from bbqing on 4th of july) I don't know but maybe I could have got some of his excrement (pee, poo, saliva) on those wounds.  Is this something I should be concerned with as far as rabies or any other sickness? I really wasn't thinking at the time that he may have something he could pass along to me.

I just wish I could have done more for him (he seemed like he was going to be okay, I really wasn't aware he needed emergency services), I really hate  the bad pet owners in this city.

Any advice would be great.

Condolences on losing the little guy - he is in a better place now. Typically, cats are more susceptible to our germs than we are to theirs. You can ask animal control if they can collect his body & send it in for testing for rabies, just to be sure. I think that you would need to be exposed to the saliva of a rabid animal in order to contract the disease. I don't think that L.A. has much of a rabies problem & it is usually carried by bats and skunks in the rural areas.  There are several common diseases that are lethal to kittens of unvaccinated mothers, including FIP, feline distemper, calicivirus, etc., plus fleas can cause severe anemia.  Poor, poor little guy - they are born only to suffer

I am proud of you for "stepping up to the plate" and caring for that little guy - at least he knew safety, gentle care & love before he passed. There are probably more kittens like him out there & it is my sincere prayer and wish that you are able to connect with a local rescue group to help you combat the problem....you are a real hero, in my eyes!

P.S....Welcome to TCS & I hope to read your posts in the future, hopefully for happier updates
