@sivyaleah   I still have a collection of Anne Rice books.  I used to go buy them as soon as they were available.  I don't know what to even do with them now, they are in a pile in the spare bedroom floor with a ton of other books that I don't have room for.  I am out of bookshelf room in the house, and no where really that I want to add another.

I used to sell used books on eBay, but it has gotten so nitpicky and complicated I just can't. even. deal.  Plus the whole thing with the sales tax now.  Just makes me not want to bother.
I'll bet you that a local convalescent facillity would love to get unwanted books donated, just a thought,

great question! and so glad you'll be doing wednesday's QotD!

i read almost exclusively via the kindle app on my computer. i do have a kindle reader, which is mainly used when there's a power outage. i have hundreds of books on my kindle reader, though even if i delete them from the device i can still re-download them from my amazon account (no need to buy them again).

it really depends on the book (ebook) whether i'll read it more than once. though after a while and having read other books, i might very well reread a book i'd enjoyed before.
Thank you!  And look for more questions about books here and there...they are a huge part of my life,   I'm thinking about an e-reader, but there are certain authors I'll always want in print, just for the heft and feel of the book in my hands.

I tend to keep them, It's difficult to get books in English over here and my reading skills in Japanese are only up to the level that ten to twelve year old kids can manage. I do read a few Japanese comic books, but it's more like studying than reading for fun.

I know which authors I like, so rather than taking a gamble on buying a book online by an author I've never heard of, I've started collecting books by my favourite writers.

I'm quite happy to read a good book over and over again. I'm working my way through my Mishima Yukio collection at the moment.

Welcome to the question of the day mamanyt1953!

I prefer a real book, not a Kindle. I have some books and series that I have kept and occasionally reread. Some books I get rid of right away.

I used to sell on ebay. That's how come I have so many. I agree once they raised the starting price from 1cent to 25 cents I quit. I used to have an ebay store. I have several people on my facebook who are my customers. I sold mostly paranormal romance and historical romance. I then tried the flea market-but too much work. I have been slowly donating a bag and box at a time to whoever wants them. I didn't spend too much on them and I am keeping the ones I want to read. The rest go to our local grocery store who said they would take them all. They have a bin of used books they sell and donate all the money to the charity of the month. Because we are so close to Lake Winnipesaukee and The beach/mountains=we get tons of tourists looking for something to read. I currently rent a booth in an antique shop but its not making the money that It should. its not easy to get to and their hours are funky. This year they are closed on all holidays which makes no sense to me. So I have given up one of my spots and combined. When I get back from vacation in Late Aug I will work more on it. Its just too hot right now to lug books. and with yard sales all over the place I notice the volume sold goes down. So for the next two months just leave it be and deal with it later. I do miss ebay. but I don't miss the post office attitudes and the bs of the entire thing.

@Winchester  I got through books 1-3 of Outlander and I am done. Book 1 was painful until she went back in time. Frank got on my nerves so bad that I found myself wishing that someone would throw him off a building. Book 2 was slightly better. Book 3 was downright painful. I got through it but I could not wait for it to be over. The more I got to know Claire and Jamie the more I liked Captain Jonathan Randall.
I understand. When the first season of Outlander aired on Starz, I was so excited to watch the episodes and I think I watched them all at least 3 times, some of them more often.

This season? I really don't care.  Part of it is that I'm watching through Prime, so I don't see it on Saturday night like I would be if I had Starz through the cable company. Part of it is that it's simply not holding my interest the way the first season did, the whole bit about being in France, about Claire losing the baby, etc. It's simply not as interesting this season....at least to me.

And since I'm watching it through Prime, not only am I paying the $8.99 a month for Starz, but I'm ALSO paying $3.99 for each episode! Not a good deal at all and I didn't realize it would be such a rip-off. I should have stayed with the cable for the duration of the show, then cancelled, like I did last year.

Anyway, that's my Outlander beef.

I like the books, but man, some of them were hard to delve through. As I recall, I had some issues with Dragonfly in Amber and Voyager, too. Once they actually got into the Colonies and set up life there, it got a bit easier again. But I agree that there's a lot of wordiness!

$3.99 an episode on top of the $8.99 a month? They don't tell you that on the website. I'd raise hell with Amazon. That's a horrible deal

That's just the tip of the iceberg for me. There are so many more reasons that I gave up (sorry if these are spoilers for anyone)

The whole Ian being kidnapped and them running through the Caribbean was awful. She was so all over the place.

I cannot stand Claire. When you want the heroine in a book to die you know it's a bad sign. When the villain is your favorite character and you are devastated when THEY die and the heroine LIVES, you know you are done. I wanted to give up right then and there but forced myself to finish book 3 because I bought it. What annoyed me most- the CROW. We knew he was going to die at Culloden but Really? Was that necessary? NO.

Jamie's dialogue was painful to read. His more than anyone else's for me. I wanted someone to grab him by the shoulders (although they couldn't because according to Claire, he stood head and shoulders above all men- GAGGING LOUDLY AT THAT), shake him violently and tell him that he is not allowed to say ONE MORE WORD until he spits the marbles out of his mouth.

Brianna is obnoxious. Even more unlikable than her mother. I didn't think that was possible. I guess being raised by that drip Frank didn't help.

The whole Laoghaire marriage thing. How did our hero forget to mention that?? That's a lot to slip the mind.

Alex and Mary. Two bigger wimps were never added to print  He should have taken her with him. The world would have been just fine had Frank never been born considering that he himself never fathered a child and Brianna- the one he DID raise is a girl and would not continue the Randall name anyway. I would sacrifice them to keep Jonathan around longer to wreak havoc on everyone else's favorite couple.

Points taken, but let's not lose track of the question, do you keep books or get rid of them?  Are you one who enjoys re-reading favorites?  Oh all right,  It was two questions, but related.

I'm sorry, Mamanyt1953.....here you are with your very first QOTD and we blew it right out of the water going off-track! My apologies.

Actually, I'm going through a lot of my books and my cookbooks, trying to figure out what I want to keep and what I can get rid of. Cookbooks are really hard for me, but I've given up four totes thus far. I've also gotten rid of a lot of my hard covers and soft covers. Still keeping my SK books though.

I used to be quite the avid book collector. When my GF and I would hit the Book Barn in CT, we'd walk out with bags of books. Since I got the Nook and then the iPad, I haven't bought a book at all, other than cookbooks. I have no room in the house. Period. It's not that I don't want to keep them.....it's that we have no room.

If we could afford it, I would love to put an addition on the house to be my library. Then I could keep all the books I wanted.

I've never read or seen any of Outlander, but I have to confess to being one of those people who falls in love with the villain all the time. I think that's why I like Mishima so much, the main characters in his novels are always such flawed, malicious types. You know they are going to come to a sticky end and they probably deserve it, but it's so much fun reading along as they get there.

My favourite villain/hero of all time was Euchrid Eucrow from And The Ass Saw The Angel by Nick Cave. A mute hunchback who decides to get his revenge on the villagers who made him an outcast............

I keep a lot of books, and sometimes I'll through them and trade them at the used book store. I keep the ones I might potentially want to read again. I mostly read on my Nook or Kindle now but the reasons that the Nook is small, lightweight, and portable and I can take it to work with me and easily carry it in my purse to read on my lunch break. I download a lot of free books to the Kindle and read at night in bed. I don't have to have a light on  or a book light and it's easier to hold.  I thought I wouldn't like the e Readers, but I was wrong

@Winchester   Not a huge issue,  and I'd actually like to hear about your issues with Claire and Jamie, although perhaps in PM would be better!

I'm hoping to move into a two bedroom apartment shortly, and I'll use the second bedroom as a library.  I'm running out of room, myself, and as I collect AND re-read my favorites, I NEED them!

I used to have a big collection of James Patterson books, but I have moved several times and had to get rid of them. I since have gotten a kindle and read my books on there! It takes up much less space, I do like to have the book in my hands sometimes though.
