I was reading that some don't believe in putting collars on their cat , I was wondering if this is a common feeling here and if so why , just wondering if there is a reason not to that I haven't thought of.

We would suggest that you distinguish between an indoor cat and an outdoor cat here. There have been cases of outdoor cats hanging themselves when they get their collar caught on a protrusion such as fencing. I would think that if you make your house "cat-proof" of such protrusions a collar might be attractive on a cat kept indoors. We often put a decorative colorful collar on an indoor white Siamese, and she was charming, but we would remove the collar when we left home -- just in case. You will be aware of the unbelievable spots our kitties can get themselves into. :-)

All the best, from

We have break away collors on our cats. The collars have a "buckle" that if the cat gets caught on something, the collar will "break" and let the cat free. The buckle will snap back together if you can find it. They also have collars with a bit of elastic that allow the same escape feature, but I prefer the others. I would never put a normal collar on my kitties.

I think as long as the collar has a safty feature they are fine. I would never put a collar that didn't have a way for the kitty to get out of it on my cat. There are SO many different choices of collars now that almost anyone can find a collar they and there cat would be happy with.

Never gave it much thought on a cat. I use collars on my dogs as they are functional - a place to clip their leash for walks. Since I don't have a functional use for collars on my cats, never considered using one.

No reason not to use a collar, as long as it's a safety collar. The brand I buy is called "Tenth Life" -- it's slightly stretchy, has a reflector strip all around, and has a breakaway catch, that will pop to release the cat if she gets caught on something.

I keep spares for each of my cats, as well as spare ID tags, so that if someone loses a collar, it can be replaced, now -- otherwise, she's kept in until a replacement is available, 'cuz no cat of mine goes out without visible ID. Fawn is the one most likely to pop a collar, and whenever she does she shows me her bare neck and lets me put the replacement on with no fuss.

We use the brand beastie bands if she was to get caught a good pull would undo it (its velcro and stretchy) she has 2 ID tags one we had made its actually advertised as a dog tag its a slightly bigger (slightly bigger than a traditional cat tag )heart shape with her name on front and our info on back and her rabies tag (which is tiny ) with an ID number and a toll free number to her vet.

my cats are microchipped. I don't believe in collars on cats unless they are break-away. Doesn't matter indoor or not, there are hazards where they could choke.

I don't like collars, but I don't know any other way to ID my babies, I live in an apartment complex with a lot of other cat owners, and I think that one of them would probably call me if they found my kitty. I don't know much about microchipping, but I doubt my neighbors would know how to read one. I use breakaway collars, and when I see them scratching, I take the collar off so they can enjoy a good long scratch on their neck.

I don't use collars for my cats. The only one that does is Amber, but I use a harness instead. A collar would not work for her and I use a dog harness on her as well. She only wears the harness when I take her out so we can use the leash. She loves her shopping cart rides in PetSmart

Sang, the microchip can only be read with a microchip reader or "scanner". You can not see the chip, it is inserted under your cats skin.

ENGLAND... LAND OF HOPE AND GLORY!
I bought Rosies first collar at the weekend!.

Although she's microchipped, i bought her the collar just in case no one thinks of scanning her, so i had engraved on the tag "I'M MICROCHIPPED".

And the good thing about the collar that i bought her is that it easily snaps open if she gets it caught.

JOHN: I'd love to see the look on peoples faces seeing Amber in a shopping cart.

My lot are indoor/outdoor kitties and on the whole they have always worn ident.collars. When we moved I did not have a cat flap installed so they spend more time indoors. When I got Dirt he just totally refused to wear a collar and would hurl himself around and practically foam at the mouth!
So that was that. I decided it was a shame for the rest so off came the collars. Tulip has a bare collar ring around her neck where the fur got rubbed off after 15 years of wearing a collar (it was NOT tight I can assure you)- this is 3 years later and it still hasnt grwn back. I think it a shame when a little kitty is knocked over by a car and no one knows who they belong to. If the cat wears a collar please put an ident on it and make it loose and breakable.
Yeah - Amber in a shopping cart

My cats have collars and tags. I cut the bells off because I wouldnt want that jingling around me all the time if I were them. Sam also has a tattoo in his ear from being neutered. It has the code number (2 numbers) of the place that did it so if hes ever lost it not only tells that hes been neutered, they can type the number into the computer and get his information. I wasnt thrilled with him having a tattoo because of the pain and risk of infection, but he didnt have a problem with it and it is useful should he get lost and lose his collar as well.

Amber is going to PetSmart on Tuesday, so I will bring the digital camera with me to get some pictures. Yes, the look on peoples faces is fun to watch. If I go there on the weekend, it can take us about 2 hours to get out with all the people looking and asking questions.

OMG
AMBER , she is big now . WOW . Now with the card you can tell her size . Thanks for sharing the pics with us .

My next doors neighbours cat got cought with the collar on the fence while climping over many years ago . And if her owner not just happen to look out of the window he would be dead now . It was not a break away collar . But since then I don't like collars on my cats and am afraid something like that will happen and nobody will see it to save the cat .
