Hi all! So I took my 17 month old baby boy to the vet today for his routine vaccines and to have a hot spot checked out. Long story short, he has not been himself. Very lethargic. Not eating. So, I read up on vaccine side effects, and that sounds about right. Then I read up on Depo Medeol injections, and there are totally different side effects. However, nowhere can I find info on receiving these all together. (ENT-R booster, Rabies 3 year booster and Depo Medeol). Seeing as you shouldn't give immuocompromised cats steroids.... I'm worried. Anyone have any input on this? He is lethargic / malaise and no interest in eating or drinking. Thanks!!

Why is he immunocompromised?  You didn't say.

BUT, itis definitely a common side effect of vaccinations for them to be lethargic for about 24 hours after receiving them.

Have you called your Vet to discuss what is happening?  That's the first thing I would do, just to make sure.

Hi mrsgreenjeens! Thank you for replying :)

I guess "immunocompromised" was a poor word choice. I know with people, vaccines for diseases makes us more susceptible to colds etc. as our immune systems deal with the vaccine. I was worried that with him in that state, steroids may not help. I had read about the effects vaccines could have (much like they do on human babies!) but none of my cats had ever had such dramatic ill effects before.

He is fine, fortunately, and back to his spunky self.

I don't like my vet. That's another problem, and I've been researching for a new one that is reasonably close seeing as car rides are traumatic for both babies and mommy (because of the babies)!!

Thank you again!!!

If anything, the steroid shot would lessen your kitty's immune reaction to the vaccine. Actually, if he received the "regular" 3-yr rabies vs the PureVax one, I wonder if the steroid was actually to his benefit? The standard 3-yr RV contains an adjuvant that heightens the immune system's response to the vaccine. These adjuvants are known to cause a higher instance of vaccine induced sarcomas. (On the flip side, any injection, be it vaccine, fluids, etc...can lead to these types of sarcomas.)

I'm happy to hear he is doing well and is back to his normal self!

Also, if you can give us a general idea of location, one of our other members here might be able to suggest a vet.
