Hi!
In the last 10 months i moved my self and my cat to Japan from Australia. Recently Bailey has stopped eating his dry food, and is also vomiting up food. Sometimes its straight after he had eaten other times its in the morning. He will still eat wet food though. I am not sure what to do. I never had this problem with him not eating dry and vomiting. He is strictly an indoor cat and had all his shot and everything before the move! any help and advice would be appreciated!

Hi, and welcome to TCS.  How old is Bailey?  Cats are actually far better off eating wet food, not dry.  They are obligate carnivores who need meat.  Can you continue to give him wet canned food?  Just switch him to a total wet food diet.  It sounds like the dry food is keeping his digestive system in a state of chronic inflammation or he is allergic to an ingredient. However, any cat that is vomiting up his food needs to see a vet quickly.  Surely there is a vet in Japan that will help this baby.  You do know that this is a holiday in the U.S., right? That may be why no replies yet.  Wishing you and Bailey the best - give him wet food and get him a vet appointment for both of your sakes.  Please keep us updated.

Bailey is only 7 years old! no heath problems in the past! In japan wet food doesn't come in cans only in packets so personally i know how much my cat can eat but my husband thinks completely different so he has actually lost 6kg since coming to japan but he was overweight before coming here!

Thank you so much for your reply! i don't mean to sound pusshy its just no one close by would help thats why i am here!

You're so welcome!  I wish I could be more helpful.  I know you're worried.  Perhaps you could phone local vets and ask if they will treat him.  Bailey had to have paperwork to come into Japan, didn't he?  I'm sure you don't mean that Bailey lost 6 kg since that would be 13 pounds.  If he has actually lost 6 kg, then you have a very sick cat on your hands and it's an emergency situation.  You are simply going to have to find a way to provide food for this cat so he gets enough to eat.  The dry food isn't working.  So either gather a lot of information and learn to feed him a raw diet, or feed him more of the wet food, however it is packaged.

I know how much the Japanese people love cats.  Surely there are rescue groups you could reach out to and perhaps through them find a vet willing to treat this baby. When you brought him into the country, did you not anticipate that he might need veterinary care one day?  Please find a vet as soon as possible, even if it means driving to another city.  If your husband won't spend the money to feed this boy, give him up for adoption to someone who will.  I realize all of our situations are different and unique, but you cannot starve this poor little cat.  I know you love him.  Just please love him enough to get him some help.

Is he just vomiting when he eats the dry food, or does he vomit the wet food also?

I totally agree with MaggieMay that there is absolutely nothing wrong with feeding an all wet diet and just forget the dry food altogether.  Just feed more of it.  Can you order canned food via the internet?  I'm not sure the food in the pouches is as healthy as actual CANNED food, as the stuff in pouches usually has more carbs in it because it's got more gravy, but not really sure of the brands available over there.  I would say though, that it sounds like Bailey is possibly allergic to one of the ingredients in one of the foods you are feeding.  However, if he is vomiting immediately after he eats, that could be from eating too fast, a very common issue with cats.

Maybe this article will help you in finding a good food, if you don't want to make his food from scratch:

Maggie may thank you for your concern, he was very over weight when he came over here he was sitting at close to 12kg, so even the vets in australia reccomended a diet. so i followed their plan as i could get the same food over here. the weight loss occured before he stopped eating the dry food.

we are searching for a 100% certain vet before we travel since bailey hates being in the car.

Yes japan loves cats, but surprisingly the main animal over here is dog. I did anticipate that he would need a vet over here before bringing him so i had called the one closest to me and they said it would be fine, but when i came to booking him an appointment for a check up they refused. Because of 'risks'even though he has had all his shots, they say he is a high risk animal.

The vomit seems to be large chunks of food, not a hairball. He is still eating the wetfood and isn't acting like anything is wrong, like running around and playing. How he acts is everything is fine, i am just more worried about the fact that he stopped eating the dry food. we have been giving him more wet when we realised he wont eat the dry.

I am not certain if its the prticular brand he is eating or if its the dry food all together. i was worried it could have been enviromental factors like the massive change in weather from what he is use to or the water as australian water has fluride yet japanese doesnt.

We are getting him a different brand today, one they had back in aus and hoping it works, but from my understanding some of the food even in the same brand has different ingredients to what i get back home.

Like i said he seems happy and healthy apart from the not eating dry and from reading another comment here maybe eating too fast! thank you for your help.

If you think this is all because he may be eating his dry food too quickly, try raising his bowl, and/or giving him smaller, more frequent meals, and/or giving it to him in a bowl that has an obstacle in it, like a clean golf ball that he has to eat around, and/or put his dry food in a container with a lid that has a small hole cut out in it that he has to roll around in order for each piece of kibble to fall out of to be able to eat it.

When he vomits, can you see the actual shape of the food?  Sometimes that is regurgitation, not vomiting.  That means it comes from the esophagus and hasn't really made it into the stomach yet.  Much better for him NOT to have flouride in his water.  We do have flouride and I filter it out.  Flouride is a neurotoxin.  It wreaks havoc in the brain and in the thyroid, so good that he's no longer drinking that water.  Any great change will cause stress in a cat, and stress can cause virtually anything to go wrong physically. Bailey's been through a lot of travel, has been taken from his former territory, has a new home to get used to, all of those things are stressful for cats, so this may well be stress-related.   Another thought is that sometimes cats are so hungry (like first thing in the morning) that they produce excess stomach acid.  And that acid will make the food come right back up.  Feeding him a little bit and then waiting for about 15 minutes and then feeding him the rest of his meal should fix it if that's what's going on.  You and Bailey are in my prayers, sweetie.  I really hope you can find a vet who will treat him, because sooner or later, he will need one.
