Hi All,

My cat is working through ideopathic cystitis (he has had xrays and a urinalysis to rule out infection or stones or crystals). He was recently prescribed xanax which has worked wonders in only two days! He is not going to the litterbox every 10-20 minutes and he has nice big pee spots in the litterbox. Today, He was sitting on his cat cave and I noticed a yellow spot on it that was slightly damp. Clearly he (or the other cat, which I doubt) peed on it. It didn't smell like spray plus the spot was pretty big, so I am guessing this was an accident due to the xanax. He has seemed  relaxed and very sleepy at times. I am going to cut the dose down tomorrow as he continues to improve but I was wondering if anyone else had experience with a cat accidentally peeing while on medication like xanax?

Thanks!

I wish I had some experience to help you, but I don't.  I know someone will be along to help you soon, though.

I'm guessing he's on the Xanax for stress/anxiety issues? I know those are big triggers for cystitis. Maple doesn't have cystits, but she did have the "litter-box anxiety" and was completely avoiding it for quite awhile. She's been on Prozac for the last... I don't know, few months I guess. I think within 3-4 weeks of taking the Prozac she'd completely stopped peeing outside the litter box. On the plus side, it doesn't have that side effect of making them super-relaxed. Xanax is a benzodiazepine which all cause sleepiness.

Anyway it's something to discuss with your vet of course. I would let them know that he's peeing outside the litter box still (is he incontinent or just peeing outside the litter box still?), and maybe a bit too relaxed.

It's probably a matter of finding what works for your kitty.  You could ask your vet about giving Cosequin.  It can help  heal the bladder lining.

I am a human doctor, not a vet, however   Xanax is used in humans as a powerful sedative, particularly for panic attacks. It is capable of making those who take it so  sedated that they are incontinent of urine and I agree that your cat could well have been  over sedated.  You should check with your vet as to a suitable dosage for the Xanax

I am glad that Xanax has worked so well, its sedative effect has obviously been important on relaxing stress as a factor in causing desire to urinate.
