So 4 days ago I was driving and I pulled into a house that had a for sale sign on it. On and underneath the porch were about 6 kittens. One of them looked like it needed to be indoors more than the others, so we took him home and are keeping him. I believe he is adjusting fine, because he uses the litter box, and he follows me around the house, sleeps on and with me. He is sleeping on my shoulder right now. I am very worried though, because on the night we got him he only ate 2 bites of soft food, and last night a few sips of kitten milk. And because it's been 4 days and that's all he's had, I'm very scared. I believe the kittens age is 7-10 weeks. Since it's a holiday weekend I cannot go to a clinic(closed until Tuesday) and can't afford the emergency hospital. I don't think I can wait 2 more days though. Please, any advice?!

Your kitten is much younger - maybe 4 weeks. Is there any way you can go back and the others? Or alert a rescue so they can help? Your kitten will do much better brought up with others and you can act as a foster.

Because he is so young, he needs to be fed by a bottle. Go out and get kitten milk replacer, powdered by PetAg is good, and a small needleless syringe. You can then feed him with that. I would also they to get his siblings so he can learn from them.

Act quickly!

Thank you.
Though i have tried the kitten milk replacer, that's what I meant by kitten milk. And I tried the bottle and syringe too, the only way he licked the milk was off of my finger. And I've taken him to the vet a couple days ago, for an exam and the vet said he was "10 weeks old" but that can't be it. But could he really be only 4?

He really doesn't look 10 weeks old to me but I could be wrong. Perhaps a bit older. 5? He definitely needs to be eating, so if you have to squirt the milk into the side of his mouth, you have to do it. Just be very sure that he doesn't aspirate it.

Other than that, I would go get some stinky cat foods and baby foods for humans that only have meat as ingredients and put those out. You can make a mush with the kmr and put them in dishes so the kitten might lap them up.

Do you think you might be able to do anything for the other kittens? Call a rescue?

Thank you! And I've just got done looking at kittens 4-6 WEEKS old. He's definitely in that group, so the vet was wrong. And I will try that, and keep updating in case something happens. Thank you! Also, a little later today i actually planned on going back to the house and seeing if the others are still there. If they were I was going to take them to a rescue/the humane society. I'm hoping that the ones near me CAN take them, because last summer while driving I pulled into a parking lot and found 3 more, but they were 8 weeks(I cared for them for a week and took them to a vet, and now they all have homes!). But before I took them to the vet I went to my humane society, and they refused to take them because they didn't have room.

If at all possible, I would try to keep one to raise your little guy with.  It will make your life much easier as long as you can afford the care.  They learn so much from each other.

Keep asking questions.  For now, you need to feed him as much as he will eat every hour or so.  He really needs the nutrition.  Try anything you can to get him to eat.

Did the vet give the kitten a de-wormer? Many kittens who live outdoors have stunted growth because of parasites. Parasites also cause upset tummies, which could be affecting your kitty's appetite. Vets approximate the age of a kitten or cat based on the teeth, not size. I took in a feral kitten 3 months ago and she is now at least 8-9 months old (she was pregnant when caught her and had her spayed), and she is very tiny and still looks about 4-5 months old. She vomited round worms 2 weeks ago and my vet prescribed a de-wormer and I'm hoping she'll grow. Parasites can stunt growth and cause a lot of problems, so if your vet didn't prescribe one for your kitty, I suggest you call the vet and request some medication. Even if they took a stool sample, stool samples can test negative and the kitty can still have parasites. De-wormers are inexpensive and have no side effects, so getting one can't hurt the cat.

It's helpful to leave out a bowl of dry kitten chow, if possible, or regular cat chow. The kitty should have access to food at all times.

I hope you were able to help the other kittens in the litter. They likely are all malnourished and have parasites. I don't know how you approached the staff at your Humane Society, but the staff at my local Humane Society once told me that they HAVE to receive any cat that is presented as a stray to them. Also ask if they have a foster program the kittens could be accepted into.

Thank you so much for your help! About 5 minutes ago, he ate the hard kitten food i had out for him. Though I've been still using a syringe for the kitten milk replacer (and have been watering it down) because he will not drink on his own.

Actually, I take that back about drinking on his own, he just drank out of the water bowl for 2 mins straight!

Please try the wet cat food now as well. Kittens need it and it is preferable to dry, though the dry food is important in between wet meals. Kittens need wet food 4 times a day for 6 months.

Have you been able to rescue the other kittens?

You're correct, kitten is 6-8 weeks old and quite beautiful!  Odds are, it doesn't know "how" to lap up food yet and may have been without mom for awhile so not nursing any more either.  The hardest thing to do is introduce a kitten to milk or soft soft food for the first time.  It sounds cruel, but you need to push (gently!) kitty's nose in the saucer and let it lick it off.  Repeat repeat - kitty will get the idea.  My 2 baby kittens took some convincing for awhile.  I bribed them by adding a little bit of canned cat food to warm milk making a slurpee for them.  Also, be sure to start brushing with soft soft brush early and trim front claws (just the very tips for now)... doing these things early will help train the cat in getting used to it and from the looks of the kitty, it will need brushing and of course being an indoor-only cat (please!) it will need a little help keeping claws at reasonable length.  Gosh I remember raising baby kitties!  The youngest I ever had were 2 brothers (who were quite ill) that were only 8 days old.  Not only did I raise and keep them, but they were both later registered in TICA and CFA - American Bobtails!!  Anyway, best of luck with kitten, be patient and enjoy that baby for the rest of its life!

Thank you all for all of your help! He's doing fine now, other than fighting with our newer kitten.
