Anybody have one? Do you like it?

Anybody want one?

It's a kitchen gadget.....and I'm tempted. They say that you can make good French fries and fried chicken using little to no oil. I don't know how accurate that is. Reviews are mixed. They're kind of expensive.

There are times when I would sell my soul for some French fries.

I've been seriously tempted by them too, but we have a tiny kitchen for the size of the house, and there simply isn't any space to put/store one.

Have you tried making baked french fries? Cut the potatoes, stick them in a bowl or plastic baggie with a tablespoon or two of oil, toss/mix really thoroughly, spread out on a baking sheet sprayed with nonstick spray and bake in a hot oven, turning part way through to ensure all sides get crispy. They're pretty close to the real deal, imo anyway. I can't remember timings though, but our oven's a bit dodgy anyway so my timings probably wouldn't help much :lol3:

I read the reviews on Amazon. . .they say it's basically a table-top industrial-strength convection oven. It circulates air around the item and removes the moisture from the outside so it gets crispy. So if you go into it thinking of it as a convection oven, you'll like it, but if you want a straight-up deep fryer replacement, you'll be disappointed. If your current oven has a convection setting you could try that a few times and see if a smaller version would be useful to you.

I have looked into them and I do not want one. I don't need another gadget taking up counter space.

plus

You cannot fry with air. It's a marketing gimmick. It's just a small, tabletop convection oven. You'd be better off just using a toaster over or the big one (which will of course heat the house up). Those table top ovens are great if you don't want to use the big oven or for someone like a college student who might not have one. I watch a Youtube channel featuring an Aussie couple living in Thailand. They have one and they like it but have said that the only reason is because they do not have a big oven in their apartment. If they did, they wouldn't have one

You and Rick eat quite healthy most of the time. When you want some fries, go to whatever place makes them the way you want them and get some. The craving will be gone and you can go back to your normal routine.

I haven't tried it.  I have pretty much gotten completely off things like french fries.  The main reason is I don't like cleaning up the mess after frying.  I just quit frying because I didn't want to clean up afterwards and I don't crave any of it anymore.  Being lazy was a good thing at least in that regard.

Well, I think I'm going to bag that idea. Our large oven is also convection and I use that quite a bit.

Columbine, I have not tried French fries that way. Usually if I really, really need them, I'll peel the potatoes into thick planks and then we'll grill them. They really don't taste all that bad....I like them with a wee bit of salt, some malt vinegar, and a bit of ketchup. But I do love my French fries.

And overall, I do think that Rick and I eat fairly healthy. Going to Wendy's or McD's once in a while doesn't kill us. Just not right now.

My mum bought me one. More like an oven. Great for toasties. Really crunchy. Chips are nothing like deep fried. I knew anything tossed in oil couldn't be half as good as the real thing. If you want junk food, eat junk food. There is no 'healthy' option. Enjoy your chips deep fried!
