help please ..

My friend has a male cat who just was operated on for a crystal in his bladder or something like that. He is home and when he uses the bathroom there is blood in the urine. Is this normal? her vet is out of town ..

Crystals in the bladder unfortunately are not uncommon and male cats do often need to be unblocked with a catheter.  The catheter irritates the walls of the urethra so a little bit of blood is sometimes present in the urine after the catheter is withdrawn.  How much blood are you seeing? A little bit is nothing to worry about and it should clear up soon.  If it doesn't, I would call the vet who is covering for your friend's vet, or call another vet, even an emergency vet, if necessary.  Usually the main concern after a cat is unblocked is that the blockage might occur again.  I hope your friend is keeping a close eye on how much his cat is urinating.  If he stops again and seems to be straining, it is an emergency and he needs to go to the vet at once.
