Hi

I adopted a kitten, about 8 weeks old, which was abandoned in a vet. The vet dewormed her but didn't vaccinate it. Yesterday I saw her and decided to adopt her but the vet said it is better to wait for the vaccination a week because changing homes can be a huge stress. So she just dewormed her again and injected an immune booster (don't know what it was that is what she called it)

So my question is should I wait a whole week or can I just vaccinate her this weekend.

they have no idea how old she is (nor do I), but she seems healthy. I had her checked up at the vet, dewormed and the immune booster. she is very playful and eats like crazy, I don't even know if I should be feeding her more.

I am feeding fancy feast (we don't have kitten wet food where I live only adult) and free feed kitten kibble which she eats now and then. She has been drinking a good amount of water.

The only thing that worried  me, are 2 things.

I used to have a kitten (my first) which died of causes unknown diarrhea from one moment to the next and died at the vet about 1 week ago, I washed everything and changed litter box but this vaccination thing got me worried.

This last time she was sleeping she made a funny sound and was breathing super fast (normal when awake).

The loss of my last kitten was devastating, in her name I am trying to give another kitten a happy life to honor her. I still feel terrible and I don't want to be  paranoid and over protective but, would hate more to go through the same thing again.

thanks guys and sorry for such a long post

And just to brag a bit about my beautiful princess, her name is Koko and she is sleeping on my lap (I do a craddle with a t-shirt so I can keep working) and that is where she was breathing super fast.

She is so cute.  I would want her vaccinated as soon as possible, to be honest I probably would've refused to take her until she is vaccinated.  The big concern is panleukopenia which could have well been what your other kitten has.  Panleukopenia is  also know as cat distemper which is really a  misnomer because it is  a parvo  type virus rather than a  distemper.

Ok now I'm worried, would the virus die off in a week? That was what I was thinking about the vaccine, thinking well in a vet all kind of sick animals go in, why the beep did they not vaccinate.

Ok, I will take her saturday to a vet (probably a different one) to have her vaccinated or should I just go tomorrow?

Also she hasn't pooped can this be the change if food?

Sorry but after my loss I am just paranoid

THANK YOU!!!! I really appreciate your help

The virus can survive in the environment for a long time more than a week.

Change in food and stress can cause constipation.  It certainly isn't  a symptom of  panleuk. Panleuk always involves severe diarrhea.

Ok, thanks

I will take her to the vet  today to have  her vaccinated, is there any way to know her age? She weights around 600grs (1.34 lbs).

I am praying it wasnt Panleuk and that she is not sick.

Make sure your vet is aware of what happened with the other kitten (and if it's the same vet, it's possible they forgot, so good to remind). My boys were not vaccinated immediately but that's because they were both exposed to a URI their mother had, and Oliver was showing symptoms with his leaky eye. Never heard of delaying shots due to stress but I guess that can be possible. In this case though, the benefit of the vaccination likely outweighs the risk. I didn't have any sick kitties at home (nothing contagious anyway) so that was doable.

Well I tooke her to another vet and she wouldnt vaccinate. She said to wait a few days because she was underweight and something wasnt right. She said it might be the stress of moving and we would have to see in 4 days how she was.

I am so worried now. Hope it is only malnutrition from where she was before because now she devours her can food (dry food not so much).

She is playfull and is pooping is ok.
So I am hopeful everything will be ok. She got ear mites so she is on ear drops.

I am praying she will be fine.

Quick update

Thank you all. Finally I had her vaccinated and she tested negative for FeLV and FIV. So now I feel safe.

Thank you all
