We adopted Jasper in December 2014 at a year old. He was never affectionate with us until November of 2015. I had triple Bypass Surgery and had one heck of a time finding a comfortable sleeping position. I'll say it was about a week and a bit later I was lying on my back in bed, when Jasper crawled up on me and bumped her head on my chin. He gently laid down on my chest and after maybe 10 minutes of scratching him under his chin and him rubbing his head across my chin hairs, he put his head down and fell asleep. I'm not the most affectionate guy, but I didn't have the heart to move him even though my ribs ached. He continued that for months and then stopped. He still does it every now and then, but it's different - like he wants a quick pet and to return to his favourite window. I wanted to share this and ask if anyone else has experienced this.

Nest Regards, Mo

There are many reports out there of cats giving their humans unusually close attention when their human is sick or healing.  Often, this behavior precedes the human even being aware there is a problem and can act as a way of foretelling trouble.  In your case, your cat was lying on your chest because he picked up on the fact that something was "off" from your usual condition.  If he ever does it again, you should probably pay close attention to what you are actually feeling at the time.  There may be something going on internally that you don't yet recognize.

I have 4 cats and they definitely cuddle more when I am sick.  I get migraines and there are times when I am in bed all day.  Starbuck will lay on my pillow right next to my face and touch me with her paw.  Casey will lay right next to me all day.  Apollo gets under the blankets next to me.  Sonny will either lay on my chest or my side.

All four of my cats are affectionate and do sleep on the bed at times during the night but their sleeping spots change when I am sick.  If I try to cover Apollo with a blanket he normally runs away.  Starbuck prefers to sleep either on my hubby's pillow or in her spot in our headboard.  Casey normally lays with hubby and then sleeps on top of the headboard. Apollo either sleeps on top of my legs or downstairs on our love seat.  Sonny usually sleeps at the bottom of the bed near my feet.

My cats all prefer to hang out in the room with us but do not always want to be in our laps or right next to us.

I had a cat when I was pregnant with my first child. She was a nightmare. Highly strung, nasty, she used to attack us and strangers. She was so bad I wasn't sure I could keep her. Then the day before I went into labour she climbed up on top of my (huge) stomach and just sat there. I couldn't believe it. My mother in law laughed and said I must be about to go into labour (and I did).

She spent the next 13 years of her life being my daughters cat. She calmed right down, never bit or scratched or hurt my daughter and was always there with her. It was amazing.

My cat likes to nap on my chest and arms. She says I make an excellent cat bed. :)

There's some research out there suggesting that because cats also purr when they're stressed or injured, the purr can also be a calming and healing mechanism. This is backed up by cat purrs being at the correct frequency to promote healing. Your kitty probably smelled/sensed that something was wrong and set about trying to get you all healed up. Doctor kitty to the rescue!
