Just got a new kitty, 13 weeks old. He's only been here a couple days now so I know he's still a little stressed out and missing his litter-mates. He doesn't like to be alone and starts meowing if I leave the room or not giving him enough attention/play.

When we go to bed in the evening he's *extremely* cuddly and loving - nuzzling our faces, purring and practically laying on top of our necks.

But when he wakes up again in the middle of the nigh and wants to play, he starts biting and chewing on me. When he does this during the day, I yelp as if he's really hurt me, or just a stern "no", and he will generally stop. But I don't want to do this at night as I don't want to wake hubby if he is asleep. So I just "kicked him out of bed" by placing him on the floor each time he bit me. But he simply jumped back up and continued until he eventually tired out and fell back asleep.

Is there anything else I can do to deter him from biting/playing in bed?

Also, is it safe to pick him up by the scruff when he's got a microchip?

Hi Snoozler,

You should be fine to scruff him with a chip, as long as it's not just been inserted. I believe the recommend you be careful about the spot for a few days after, but after that it's fine.

Sounds like typical kitten night crazies.
We actually ended up closing the cats out of the bedroom at night at one point for this reason. (Now two of them are older and police the younger one.) Can you give him toys in your room to distract him with when he wakes up? You're on the right track by removing him from bed, but you want to make sure he doesn't get too much attention when he wakes you up or he'll be accomplishing what he wants.

Here are a few good resources on night crazies and playing with your cat so that they sleep longer through the night. Hopefully there are some ideas in there to help you out, but I'm sure others will be along soon to share their ideas and stories!

Thanks! Yea we have been trying to get into a routine of heavy play followed by food just before we are going to bed.. so he sleeps then.

He's getting better. Tonight he slept all the way through until around 4 - then woke me up biting and wanting to play.. I ignored him and he eventually went back to sleep until 6:30 when we got up. ^^

I'll check out those links, thanks!

My kitten did the exact same thing the first weeks I had him with me.

He's around 3 months and 2 weeks now and used to be so crazy in bed while I tried to sleep. I slept horribly those first weeks. Eventually he learned that I was not going to indulge him at night. I simply ignored him, and if he started biting me I'd put him on the floor. He has his toys around and would go play with those, get tired out, and come back to bed for cuddles and sleep more.

Not food time either, if that's what he wants. I have him on planned meals during the day, so he now knows that the night is for sleep time.
Sometimes he goes way too hyped anyways, and I put some soft "cat music" on youtube to calm him down. It usually works like magic, and he's back on bed purring and cuddling with me :)
