I took in an orphaned kitten that was about 3 weeks old and she's now about 6 weeks old. I had been keeping her crated the first 2 weeks as she was so small that I didn't want her to get hurt and 1 of my other cats wasn't taking too kindly to the new addition. Well, everyone is getting along swimmingly now and I'm letting Naboo roam the house freely and she's doing great with that. My question is, she won't use a litter box. She will poop next to the litter box. I'm not terribly worried about it ruining my carpet as we are going to be replacing the carpets very soon but I do need her to figure out the concept sooner rather than later. Any suggestions?

Thank you for taking in an orphaned kitten, oh my she's so so cute! A tiny little fluff ball. Just adorable.

The fact she was separated from her mother so young means she didn't have enough time (barely any! less then 3 weeks for sure, who knows when she was orphaned from mom) to be taught that type of behavior skills.
She's still rather young at 6 weeks, if she spent the last 3 in the crate. Sounds like you have another cat, so excellent! Watching the older cat do their business in the box, will help teach her, for sure.
To help things along, you can pick her up after her meals, and stick her on the litter box. Try to get her to associate after eating, when its pooping time to go to the box. Maybe dig with your finger in front of her, show her to dig. Other users on the forum say that taking the cat poop from the carpet or wherever and placing it on top of the litter, and showing the kitten "hey! poop goes here!" helps as well. Good luck! I hope those things help her learn quicker then not :)

She will actually do better with less space for now. Try confining her to a room with all of her necessities - food, water, litter boxes, etc. Kittens her age won't travel to a litter box because they don't remember to look for it, they just go when they need to go. She'll do much better with a litter box boot camp for the next few weeks where she sees the box every time she has to go. You should also put all accidents in the litter box and clean all accidents with an enzyme cleaner.

She'll catch on in the next two weeks! I put doggie pee pads around the kitten box, because a couple of my kittens went right next to the box too. They caught on quickly though. [emoji]128522[/emoji]
