Hello all! I'm very new to this site, I've been lurking, now I'm posting [emoji]128570[/emoji] It's been a looooooong weekend. On Friday, my 16-year old cat(only child), Garcia, was straining when he was in the cat box. I scooped him up and took him to the vet. They were busy so I left him there. The vet called me to say he had a stone lodged in his urethra which was causing him to not be able to pee. With my permission, she sedated him and tried to get it loose to no avail. She called me again and gave me two options 1.) PU surgery which is upwards of $2800 or 2.) put him down. My heart sank.

I went home, the boyfriend and I cried and decided we'd take the financial hit for our little guy. He's our baby, the light of our lives, and for being 16 he sure does like to wake us up in the middle of the night by howling, just sayin hi, doesn't want anything. He gets bitey and swatty when you play with him, he's basically a huge kitten. We can't give up on that!

I called his vet, told her we'd like to pursue the surgery. She referred me to a internal medicine surgeon, I took him in that afternoon. The best news was when the surgeon called me that night to say that they didn't need to do the PU surgery, she got all 12 stones out and he was unblocked. He stayed the night, I picked him up Saturday morning. Got him home, everything was peachy until Sunday...he couldn't pee anymore, no dribbles, nothing. ER vet here we come...

We got there, they separated me from my baby, I sat in the waiting room for 4 hours, next to a 200 pound St. Bernard and a French bulldog. I didn't know what was happening. Finally got to a room, vet did an X-ray at my request to make sure there wasn't a missed stone or anything. That was all clear. She put him on Valium, an anti inflammatory, and another antispasmodic on top of his pain killer and antibiotic. He ended up staying the night. I picked him up this morning, after being told he's peeing like a champ for us, etc. I was happy, so happy, to get my baby home. I get him home and immediately starts pacing, in the litter box, out, in, out, repeat. Same issue that sent him to the ER. I don't know what to think, his regular vet wants to give him the night and see if he perks up, it's been a rough few days for the poor guy. His bladder is soft, not rock hard like before the ER visit, he's getting little dribbles out, eating wet food, not drinking much water though.

My question is, even though I'm religiously keeping up on his melds, could he still be hurting so bad he's scared to pee? I just don't understand how he's "peeing like a champ" there but anxious and semi-straining, more frustrated really, at home. Anybody else have this happen? Guide me fellow cat people.....

Try changing  everything about the litter box, a new box, new litter, location.  He could be associating the pain from the stones with that particular box and is afraid of it.

We are going through the same thing. Give it a couple days. They do associate the box with the pain, but our cat has gone back every time. Hope he feels better!
