I'm getting a second cat and i'm so excited.  I think my current cat could really use a friend.  Iv'e done all the research about introducing a second cat, but can someone tell me what to expect?  Like what are your daily routines with two cats?  Do you feed them in two separate places?  Do they use separate litter boxes or the same?  Basically can someone tell me what it's is like living with two cats and any important things I should know about?

Also the cat I'm interested in adopting right  now is three months and my current cat is ten months.  Is that too much of an age gap? My current cat is very playful so I'm looking for a playful cat.

Thanks!

We recently got a new kitten as a playmate for my 1 yr old cat and it took about a week to introduce them. Feed them on seperate sides of a door before you let them meet face to face that way they associate each other with a "happy or fun" time of day. And then when you let them meet play with them equally that way the other doesnt get jelous. My one yr old didnt like me for a couple days because hes been the only cat but he got over it and loves the baby. The only thing that has worried me is that he plays a little rough because hes bigger but i found that if you watch them when they play its not so bad.

Also to answer your question about the litter box, yes ypu need another litterbox. You should get one for each cat that you have even if they co use a box its always safe to have another one so that they dont get territorial.

Ok thanks!  But it's ok for them to share litter boxes or should I discourage that?

They can definitely share! You just want them to have the space if they want it.

Oh ok thanks!  Also will they know to eat out of their own food bowls?  What if they start to eat out of each other's food bowls and then they end up eating too much/too little?

They'll probably share food too. While you're acclimating them to one another, you'll want to feed frequent meals rather than free feed. This is so that they associate one another with tasty, good things as often as possible. Obviously the kittens also needs unlimited access to food, so you may need to leave some high quality kibble down as well. You'll see what works for you.

Have you read some of our articles on cat introductions? It can be a slow process.

You may have already gotten your second cat and I certainly don't want to discourage you, especially since so many cats need homes, but just be aware that this will complicate your life somewhat (as well as add extra joy, of course!). The issue of having them eat from separate food bowls isn't a problem for the most part -  cats will eat from whatever bowl they choose. The problem may come in if one ever needs to be put on a special diet and needs a certain type of food. This will complicate things especially if you will free feed them, meaning they have access to their food at all times. Another complication will be when it comes time to take a stool sample to the vet - all stool pretty much looks the same (wink) so unless you see the "depositer" in action it will be challenging to match the right stool with the right cat. I have four cats and I have had much trouble with infighting within my multi-cat household. Even though I love my cats dearly and would never get rid of any of them now that they are mine, if I had it to do over again I would simplify my life by having only one cat at a time (plus, I have been put deep in debt by constantly taking one or other to the vet). Just something to think about. Cats rule!!
