Hello. I'm wanting to purchase an air purifier for my home to help with pet fur and dander. Does anyone have any experience owning one and does it really work? Are they loud?

It's been a few days since you wrote and I'm sorry it's taken so long to get back to you.  I did have a small air purifier for awhile that was a hand-me-down and unfortunately, I don't remember the brand.  I never noticed any difference in air quality while it was on, but my son-in-law said that he did so I always kept it running when he was visiting.

You asked a great question, though.    Here are a few threads that might help you:

As you can see, this question comes up from time to time.  Many people do use them so I hope you can find one that works for you.

Hi, I have two Austin Air models that I run all the time - a large unit and a small one (link below).  I purchased them when I lived in Texas, where I became allergic to cedar (the dreaded cedar fever).  They have been running almost non-stop for 10 years.

On the low setting, both are very quiet - just mild white noise.  On the medium level, both are loud, but tolerable.  The highest setting sounds like a jet engine; I only use the high setting when I'm out of the room and want to clean the air.

I'm not allergic to cat hair or dander, so I can't say with certainty that they will help with that situation.  I can say, that they attenuate my allergies and also remove background orders in the house.  Austin Air does make a model designed specifically for pets, but I have not used that one.

Regardless of what company you choose, do some research.  There are a lot of poorly made units in the market place, as well as a fair share of scams.  Austin Air is a well respected company in this product space.  A quality air purifier will likely be expensive.

Best of luck.

I have this one http://www.lowes.com/pd/Idylis-5-Speed-465-sq-ft-HEPA-Air-Purifier-ENERGY-STAR/50274749   It's a Lowe's brand.  I live in an apt and don't have allergies so I didn't go high  end.  It does make a noticeable difference for the better.  It has 5 fan speeds and 4  and 5 are loud.  It has an auto function which  the reviews said  didn't seem to work properly, it switches to the very  low speed to soon.  I tried it and I agree with the reviews.   I don''t use it which seems to  be most people's solution.

Thank you! I will check out the links given. I have two fur babies and find myself sweeping and running my Roomba daily. I am hoping that an air purifier can help not so much with smells, but dander and flying fur.

I can't say that I have noticed reduced fur flying around the house.  Though hard to say; everything in my house is covered in cat hair.
