Hey! I've noticed that when I get my cat comb out to groom my cats' fur w ith, they ALWAYS try to eat the fur off the comb! I spoke with Superkitty and her cats do this also. We were wondering if this is common for cats? If so, why in the world would the cats want to eat the fur off the comb!!

Would love ur input on this!

Mine do that as well, if I don't catch them fast enough- Bailey my orange boy eats the horse's tail too!

Trent is obsessed with eating any and all fur that was once on him.
Doesn't matter if it's in the comb, or shed on the floor, collected on the cat tree.... My theory is that he thinks it was his, is his, and therefore he needs to eat it.

That's so funny you bring this up now...I was JUST in brushing Peaches and petting her. She sheds alot. When I ran my hands ovr her fur and came up with a handful of hair, before the hair hit the ground, she was catching it in her mouth and eating it. I don't guess it will harm them, will it? They lick themselves all the time so fur must be safe for them

No good theories yet on the hair-eating! But funny as heck so far. Silly freaky kitties.
I figured they're trying to cover up any traces of themselves, and their scent's all over the hair obviously.

Actually you don't want them eating hair Ginger, hairballs are a real concern. I just make sure that the cats get fiber everyday to push the hair through their system- I give them either catnip loose, or canned pumpkin in their canned food.

It looks to me that all cats like to eat their cat hair lol . Mine like to eat it too , or more like lick it off the comb . I don't let them though and 99.9 % their wont get it and I am faster then the cats
. If they get it , I take it out of the mouth . Cats are so funny

That's my theory too.

Hissy, letting cats eat a small amount of catnip every day provides enough dietary fiber to help prevent hairballs????????????

***gives Snowball some catnip***
