So on my previous post i had mentioned how my little girl kitty was having eye problems and we were worried that she was going blind. We took her and my other two to our vet to be boarded while we went on vacation. When we got back, our vet confirmed our fears. She is not going blind, she is already totally blind. What has us and our vet puzzled is that she seems to be completely healthy. She is up to date on all shots and he said to him her eyes look normal. We set up an appointment for Wednesday with a kitty eye doctor, so hopefully we will get some answers. Has anyone else dealt with a healthy cat going blind? It's absolutely heartbreaking! The vet mentioned a few things such as retinal detachment, corneal ulcers and some type of atrophy. I'm praying that the eye doctor can figure out whats going on and hopefully restore at least some of her sight. If anybody had dealt with this i would love to hear your story!

Ok, so I read your other post and saw that your girl presented with some opaqueness to her lenses a month or so ago as well as dilated pupils? So, while the rest of her may be healthy, there has been some concern for her eyes.

In the pic is almost looks like she has nuclear sclerosis (doesn't cause blindness).

I'll be very curious what the ophthalmologist says. I might take a guess at glaucoma, but that typically causes the eye to swell.

By chance, what does she eat? Any dogs in the house?

Hi CatPack! Thanks for responding! There are definitely no dogs here lol I'm not a dog person. Just Reeses and my other two Patrick and Toby. Reeses eats friskies wet food before bed, fancy feast dry food during the day, and only drinks bottled water. Spoiled I know! I haven't noticed any eye swelling at this point, but I'll definitely watch for it.

One thing that confuses me is when the blinds are open and the sun is shining, her eyes clear up and go down. I thought that if a cat was blind their eyes wouldn't respond to light?

From my brief and quick research, it appears that pupillary response can be normal in a blind person (and I would suspect cat as well) if the nerves are intact and is dependent upon the cause of the blindness.

I'd never thought about this. Very interesting!

I do have a cat with retinal degeneration (stable...caused by lack of taurine before I got him) who as issues with his eyes adjusting to bright lights. His pupils are much slower to retract than an average cat.

So the vet nade a diagnosis!! She has extremely high blood pressure which caused the blindness and retinal degeneration. He put her on medication to try to lower her blood pressure and said that there was a very low chance of regaining sight.

What a relief to get a definitive diagnosis! Sending lots of positive vibes that she will be one of the ones to regain some vision!!
