Hello, my name is barbie, I'm new to the site but I've always read these forums for help.

I have a 7 month old, orange baby, named little george. Recently, he's been having what seem like cramps near is rear. They don't seem to hurt him much, when he gets them he lay's down to stretch & spread his legs. He doesn't cry in pain, when I feel on his back legs he doesn't stop me from touching them. He is still playing with his brothers & eating just fine. He continues to run around & jump on things as normal. It's just once in awhIle during play he scoots his legs up & lays down.

I have not consulted my regular vet as he passed away suddenly, so I'm in the process of finding a new vet.

So, my question is, should I be overly concerned as I usually am when it comes to my cats? Or could it necessarily be a muscle cramp or a pulled muscle? Again, he is showing no signs of pain, just temporary discomfort. When I rub his legs, he gets back up & runs like nothing even happened.

Thank you in advance. Any advice is welcomed.

Hi Barbie, glad you are here. I'm sorry Little George is worrying you. I personally haven't encountered anything like you are describing. I think a vet visit would be a good idea and if at all possible would look for one that specializes in cats. Getting a video of what you are describing could be helpful in getting an opinion on what's going on with Little George.
Keep us posted, hopefully one of our members will have more information to share.

Sorry to hear of your concern. Are you sure your cat is having pain? Stretching hind legs is a pretty common activity. My boys will do it almost as a greeting when I get home. It is really hard to know for sure without seeing a vet but if little George is still running, playing and doing everything he has always done, it is possible he is ok. I would keep a close watch and note any changes in stool, appetite and how he acts. If any doubt a visit to the vet might help your confidence that he is ok.

Please keep us all posted and how George is doing. I love the red tabbies for sure. Got three young boys my self. ;)

I'm completely head over heels for tabbies. (:

I can tell there is something a little off with the way he's been acting when the cramp happens. I know it's hard to describe, but, he does usually stretch & such when he lays down. I've been keeping an eye out. I try to rub out the cramp when it happens. He kinda just falls over when it's bothering him.

When he greets me, he always reaches up & stretches out on me. That hasn't changed, it's usually his sign for me too pick him up. He's a bit spoiled. I've had tabbies in the past that do the same thing's he does.

I've never seen a cat get a cramp like he has. It doesn't seem to discourage his regular behavior. I'm still concerned when I see it happening. I will place a call to a vet in my area to see if they have any advice. I've gotten recommendations.

Thanks guys. & if you have any further advice, please let me know.

Sorry I'm just getting back. So, I called the vet & explained his situation. They told me to wait until the weekend to see any improvement if not bring him in. I waited until wednesday, it was the only day I could get him in.

Apparently, he has narrow disc's in his back. Even the doctor said he's never seen that in a cat. For now, they gave him a shot of cortisone & inflammation medication to take for the next 3 weeks. I've been told if his condition worsens to bring him back in.

For now, he's pretty much on bed rest. I don't know how I'm gonna get him to do so, when he starts to feel better. But, the vet told me it's important to keep him from running around, playing, & jumping

Thank you for everyone with a suggestions. Wish us luck![emoji]128518[/emoji]

How did the vet diagnose him? Did you get X-rays?

Can you post the exact name of this "inflammation medication", the strength and the dosing instructions ?

I'm not a cat, but I have the same problem, and it's called spinal stenosis. The cortisone shot will help a lot - it reduces the inflammation, which causes the pain. I am also taking an inflammation medication, Celebrex, which is an NSAID. I imagine they are giving your cat some kind of NSAID, which does the same thing. These meds will control the problem for a long time.

They did do X-rays. The doctor felt along his spine for any pain area. He nearly jumped out of his skin when the doc found it. He was going to do blood work to make sure his muscles were fine. But, decided it wasn't necessary when he felt the problem.

Okay, so, it's a steriod. It's called "prednisolone" 5mg. The instructions are long. Haha. But, I have to give him 1/4 tab orally every 12 hours for 5 days. Then, 1/4 tab every 24 hours for 5 days. & finally, 1/4 tab every 48 hours.

He's taken them just fine, they're so tiny he doesn't even realize he's taking them. Thanks for the welcome! (:

He's not on them long term. They can cause serious medical conditions in cats. He's only on them for 3 weeks. I'm only on day one of the meds, but, I didn't see much of a change when they gave him the cortisone shot. I wasn't expecting a 100 percent turn around, but, I was expecting something.

The steroid injection will help him for a long time, but not permanently. Sorry to say, but it will take surgery to fix permanently, and I don't know if they do that for cats.
