I don't know what to do my 16 year old cat was just diagnosed with diabetes. I also need to get him insulin but it is $300. After taking him to the vet a couple times and getting all the other medicines I am not broke I don't know if there's any places out there that can help with getting medicine for diabetes cats. I am trying my best to save his life but I'm having the worst time doing so. Does anybody know of any organizations that help with this. Please my heart is breaking and I don't know what else to do.

Hi cat lover 16 !

There is a specialized online diabetes forum where you'll get all the information and support you'll need....you will find it right here:

Feline Diabetes Message Board

Now, two things:

We'd like your feedback about your experience 'over there'.......

And, make sure you show us some pictures later....which we'll never refuse!

@cat lover 16   It sounds like such a hard situation and must feel terrible.  I don't know if you have tried any of the contacts contained in this article but hopefully there will be something helpful in there.

I hope you manage to find a way to fund your cat's care, and that you and your cat feel comfortable with the treatment routine required.

Check out mydiabeticcat.com and BCP insulin is what I gave my cat and she went into remission the last year of her life where I didn't have to give her insulin anymore. She lived to be 18 and a half and she was diabetic for 4 years. Call BCP Pharmacy in Texas or look them up online. The insulin I ordered online and was packed in ice and received within 24 hours and I paid $50.00. For it. It's compounded insulin that is quality controlled. Good luck to you and your kitty! Jill

It was very hard to make a decision to put him down. But he ended up with neuropathy from his kidney failure and when he could barely walk and he was dragging himself I knew it was time. He looked at me like Mommy please please I'm tired.i cry most of all day everyday. I didn't know that it would be this painful to not have him here. And now my other cat's depressed and won't eat. I don't know what to do to make her better now. I feel like I failed Sagie Pine knot doing more quicker or having the funds to get him the diabetes medicine. And now I feel like I'm failing Lily because she so depressed you will eat.

I do not believe you are failing Lily, and you did not let Sagie down either, you did not let him carry on in pain and suffering.  And all any of us can do is the best we can.

It is natural for our cats to look for and grieve for their feline companions, just as it is for us.   They have their own ways of making sense of their new situation and for some it may take longer than others - strangely for my previous cat hers was a massive sense of relief once she managed to convince herself that her sister wasn't coming back and that was when I realized how much her sister had bullied her.   Other cats will seek more contact with their human companion, or find a comfort blanket or toy.  You might find this article helpful in how you can best support Lily:

I am sorry to hear of your loss of Saige.  No one is ever ready to say goodbye.  You made a very difficult decision because you love Saige and did not want his pain and suffering continue no matter how much you are hurting right now.  The bond you shared with Saige will never be broken and will always live on in your heart.  Please be kind to yourself and allow as much time as you need to to grieve.  Hugs to you during this very difficult time.  Also just to let you know having money for treatment of Saige's Diabetes would not have meant you could fix everything.  One of my close friends who has a lot of money lost her diabetic cat to the same thing you lost Saige from.  She did every single test the vet could think of and spent a ton of money on medication.  In the end it could not save her fur baby.  Having money does not always mean you can fix things.  Sometimes there is just nothing else you can do but make the difficult decision not to let your baby suffer anymore.

You did not fail Saige and your are not failing Lily either.

It sounds like Lily is grieving along with you.  Perhaps you could try using some meat flavored baby food that has no garlic or onions in it to help get Lily to eat.  Some other options would be wet food Fancy Feast or you could cut up and cook some chicken breasts for her.  Make sure the chicken breasts are cooked just plain. I used chicken to get one of my cats to eat after a loss. I cooked it in a skillet and cut it up into tiny pieces. By the time I was done cutting it up it was cooled up enough to eat.

The best thing you can do for Lily is give her extra love and attention right now.  I know this may sound odd but explain things to Lily.  I did this with a friend's cat when his buddy passed away unexpectedly in his sleep.  Cats do grieve for each other.  Another thing that I found helpful is trying to use toys to distract my friend's cat when he would walk around looking for his buddy.  She had to go out of town the next day for a brand new job so I spent a ton of extra time with her cat. You can try making a ball out of aluminum foil and tossing it across the room to see if you can get Lily to play.

Please keep an eye on her eating habits though because you do not want her to go too long without eating anything. Hopefully some one else will have more ideas on how to get Lily to eat while she is grieving.
