Would this be safe to add to my cats home made food?

i tried finding a bacon with no additives, and the only store that has, is too far from my house. so im looking around online for something from amazon.

just want to add something as my cat seems a bit bored of her home made food.

What proteins do you feed? If you only feed chicken, could you mix it up and make some batches of turkey, rabbit, lamb or beef?

I wouldn't add lard to food. It's basically pure fat.

im finding it hard to find good sources of other types of meats. they mostly have additives. chicken is the only one i've found without additives or hormones. i mostly shop at Bj's wholesale store. i have checked stores near me, but havent found anything.

Edit: i did find turkey meat a few months back... my cats hated it, they refused to eat it. i had to end up giving away a lot of food i had made. i tried for many days and they just refused to eat.

Also, i only wanted to add bacon fat because this site suggests it

http://www.catinfo.org/makingcatfood.php

i would love to find good bacon to just make it myself

Oh wow, I haven't heard of that before. It's just against my nature to add fat to anything, but that might just be me. I don't make homemade raw (yet) so I haven't completely researched it yet. I'm planning on starting with EZ Complete, and going from there.

I'm surprised your cats don't like turkey. Both of mine go crazy for it.

A lot of members order from Hare Today. You might try that. You can get a ton of different proteins that way. I've found that my cats like a lot of proteins I wouldn't have guessed, like RadCat Venison and Lamb.

Have you tried pork, terestrife? Our cats love pork and the pork they sell at our grocery store doesn't have additives. Turkey thigh didn't go over as well here as I thought it would, though the cat do eat it, but I may try making a turkey/chicken blend. Our pickier cat will eat just about anything that has hand-pulled chicken breast pieces. (I think she likes the texture...)

As for added fat, hmm, as much as I love Dr. Pierson, I don't think I'd want to add bacon fat, even in small amounts, because of all the additives. (I love, really love, bacon but it's not really good, in terms of health, for anybody!) I'm not sure what I think about adding lard since I don't know much about how it's produced. I do like to keep a lot of the fat that's naturally on the pork I buy because most healthy cats can handle fat pretty well. There's a brief mention of fat in homemade food on the Food Fur Life site. Since I usually blend pork with chicken, usually chicken breast that's very low in fat, over all, the food isn't that high in fat.

Good luck, terestrife!

If you want to add bacon fat just buy some bacon, cook it up, and add bacon fat. I wouldn't really worry about "additives" and things like that. Whatever bacon you can find is fine.

Thanks for the suggestion, i'll check out the site! =)

My cats used to like turkey flavored canned food, but for some reason they did NOT like the turkey thighs when i made it myself

then again, my cats are really spoiled. I'm stunned they've liked the chicken recipe that they've lasted on it so many months. But i can tell they are getting a bit bored.

Bacon itself is processed, so you can't really get around that issue unless you don't use bacon. You might want to look into trying EZcomplete if you want to change it up. Cats really love the taste of EZ added to their food.

On turkey: one other thing to consider is texture. Our pickier cat will eat just about any homemade food if the meat has been shredded by hand and piled on the plate. If it's sliced or diced or (heaven forbid!) spread out on the plate, she'll eat it but isn't as eager. If it's been run through the food processor, even to a medium consistency (like a very chunky pate) forget about it! Also, I may see if the cats like turkey breast more than turkey thigh.

On pork: yes, I make mixes, though the proportions vary and I might mix chicken breast, chicken thigh, and pork. I buy different cuts of boneless pork, too, depending on what's on sale. (They always seem to have at least a few packages of pork on sale at my local store.) I make cooked food so don't worry about trichinosis; I think it's recommended to freeze pork first if you're going to feed it raw. (I think you make cooked, too, right?)

And I know what you mean about not wanting to add extra chemicals to the cats' food. That's why I've never used the bacon fat, either.

Ours definitely love it!

Yes, i make cooked. My cats didnt like raw food when i tried. thanks for the suggestion on texture, thats something that never occured to me. i usually just grind everything to make it into a pate form. I used to add in chicken breast chunks, and now that i think about it, my one cat really did enjoy those pieces of chicken. i stopped doing it, as it was faster to run everything through the machine at once.

thanks for all the suggestions. i'll try out different things to keep my cats interested. thanks for responding!

EZ is much more palatable than Ustew. My cats hated Ustew (other members have said the same thing) but (most) love EZ. EZ is similar in terms of the powder to Ustew, just a better product. It is however a little more expensive.

If you've been feeding your cats chicken exclusively for a long time, they may have a hard time accepting any new food.  You'll have to introduce it to them very slowly, starting with just a 1/2 teaspoon along with their regular food, maybe even less, and increase the amount slowly over days to weeks.

I've found turkey, rabbit and pork to be the most reliably well-loved meats.  If you're following the catinfo.org recipe, you could alternate between chicken and turkey versions, and use pork and maybe rabbit as substitute for the extra meat called for in the catnutrition.org variation.  Also, ordering different grinds from Hare Today or My Pet Carnivore is a good way to introduce variety.

I have a hard time regarding addition bacon fat or lard to a pure chicken diet as "variety".  Cats want to eat a variety of proteins because nature knows what she's about:  nutritional deficiencies are far less likely in a varied diet.

Lard is fine for a carnivore, if you want to add more fat They don't get clogged arteries like we do ;). I would use lard over bacon fat because of how much salt bacon has.

thanks! i'll try it out. my cats have liked ustew and have been using it for 6 months. but maybe i can alternate the supplements so they wont get bored. they still like their food, they just seem bored these past couple of weeks, and have been leaving some of their food.
