Hi everyone! I am new to this site. My cat, Norman, is a 13 month old male domestic short-hair. He is happy and healthy with the exception of a rectal prolapse. It happened about a month ago and initially he was found to have a parasite so we were  given some medication and told to put hydro cortisone cream on the area a few times a day. The rectum went back in but eventually, within a few weeks, came back out again. The vet said that he thinks the prolapse is just from straining/constipation as all of his recent tests and checkup came back negative.

Last Friday he had a perianal pursestring suture put in. Afterwards he became so backed up that I took him to an emergency vet on Sunday and we had to get him cleaned out, which the vet was able to do while maintaining the suture. This morning, after a week, the vet removed the suture and was pleased with the way it looked. I was told to keep him on wet cat food and give him 1/2 tsp of Miralax once a day for the next few weeks. Well, just a few hours ago I noticed that the rectum is protruding just as before. I just spent a total of about $600 between the two visits and I'm very upset that it's already back. It looks like the suture failed.

Anyone have any experience with this? I really, really don't want to have to go through another suture or a more expensive, invasive surgery. If we keep it moist is this something he can potentially live with for awhile? Overall it doesn't seem to bother him too much.

Thanks!

Tracy

I would recommend a second opinion on your kitty.  A prolapsed rectum is not something kitties can just live with, unfortunately.

I wholeheartedly agree with Stephanie.

You need to take your cat back to the vet who did the initial repair.

If you don't get it repaired, it will continue to get worse and worse.
