I've been reading that [unflavored] Pedialyte can be given to cats to help rehydrate them after a bout with vomiting.

So I got one bottle for my cat, but I'm wondering about the proper method in which to give it to him.

Do I give it to him straight?

Do I mix it in with his water?

You can try mixing it with his water if you want, but if he's drinking well you don't really need Pedialyte :dk:. Usually you would use a dropper or needle-less syringe to give it to a cat who's too sick to drink. If it's just "normal" cat vomiting he won't need anything special. If you feel like he needs a bit of extra hydration, give him a couple droppers-full, that should be enough.

Okay, that sounds workable.  He seems to be doing well.  His appetite is great and he does drink his water well.  I can feel his fur getting a little bit softer with each day so I guess I'm on the right track.  I mainly just wanted to know if Pedialyte for a cat was an "approved" tactic for something like this or something one should never ever do, no matter what.

Thank you for your help.

Like I said, Pedialyte is great for a dehydrated cat, you usually have to give it to them with a dropper though. Just for random barfing it's not necessary. There's no real "dosage" and it's perfectly safe---like a human drinking Gatorade, that's all.

Hi, Daniel.  This is the recommended dosage and way to give a cat Pedialyte. Use an eyedropper or a small 1 ml needle-less oral syringe and give several tablespoons of Pedialyte (tepid temperature) at the front of the mouth. Take your time to do this,  a little bit at a time so that fluid does not inadvertently get into the lungs.

Four tablespoons every hour is the goal for a 10 pound cat.  It is possible to overdose on Pedialyte so after approximately 8 tablespoons of this spaced over several hours begin to give some tepid water and continue to give the Pedialyte, several tablespoons, every 4-5 hours in between. Then cut back further on the Pedialyte as you see improvement.  Hope this helps.  If a cat is vomiting and/or has diarrhea, it needs to go to the vet, but this will often get you through until your appointment.

Just a reminder that caring for ones companion animals is a very serious responsibility, and often, in light of that concern, members will create threads seeking information from other members. While we allow and encourage expression of opinions and the recounting of personal experiences, it is the forum's official position that no online advice can ever supercede or replace the care and advice of trained medical professionals who have first hand knowledge of the individual animal's condition. Please check with your vet before giving anything to your pet.
