I recently began using Adequan for some of my older cats with arthritis. One of my cats, about 1 hr after giving the shot SQ in scruff, began vomiting and making horrible crying sounds. That went on for about 1 hr and she seems fine now, but not sure I want to continue using it on her. She is 15 yrs old, weighs 10.2 lbs, and has IBD. She gets pepcid, zofran, cosequin, and VSL-3 probiotic daily, all prescribed by veterinary internist. I gave her (0.2)ml of Adequan SQ, not IM, as recommended. Has anyone else had their cat have a reaction to Adequan? All the information on it is for dogs, so not sure what to think.

I've used Adequan a handful of times and never had any issues. However, it's certainly possible that this Kitty doesn't tolerate it for some reason.

Was this her first injection? I've been told before that the body has to have been introduced to a substance at least once prior to having a reaction (not sure how true this is, though...)

If it was her first injection, I think I'd consider giving her another, but doing so at the vet just to be on the safe side.

PGALORE, Two months ago we used Adequan for the first time on our twelve year old neutered male, Tyler. Within 24 hours he was vomiting blood and had to be rushed to our regualr vet who sent us on th a emergency hospital. He was in the ICU for three days. Multiple tests, X-rays, ultrasound,  a blood tranfusion and four thousand dollars later they we are still not sure what happened to him. Since bringing him home he has returned for follow up blood work several times and the results have progressed from anemia to normal. No one wants to say it was the Adequan but he was fine before and is fine now two months after it has left his system. The only medication he was on at the time was ocsequin once daily. I would love to know if there are more of us who have had this frightening experience.

Thank you for sharing your kitty's experience. Re-assured me that I am making the right decision in not giving it to this particular cat again. The other 2 cats have had several shots with no reactions, no noticeable improvement either. My veterinarian said it can take a couple months to see a difference. I  will finish the 2 bottles I bought and see if they seem to get around better.

I gave my 13 yr. old his first dose of Adequan 25 units in an insulin needle subq. this morning. He threw up his food and any other food I have fed him throughout today. I want to give him this medicine to bring him relief but throwing up seems like a uncomfortable side effect. Did your cat get better with its reactions.?

My cat was given two doses of Adequan at the vet's office and began throwing up yellow fluids. After another trip to her vet and costly tests, she had pancreatitis. Whether or not this was caused by the Adequan, we will never know. I made the decision to stop the medication. After several months and a steady decline in her health, I had to make that difficult decision that pet owners do not want to make. I was and am still devastated.
