I know you said you can't afford the vet, but if he has an abscess, he needs to see the vet as those get infected very easily.  Can you call the vet and work out a payment plan?

I know they won't help him
I have watched my old cat die because they wouldn't take him because we don't have money
Where I live they don't worry about animals its all about money

If he doesn't seem like it's bothering him overly bad and it's draining. Well of course his face is swollen from it. Keep an eye on it and if you can there are ointments you can get that will help with any infection already there and keep a new one from forming so it can heal on it's own. Getting him to a vet at some point soon is a good idea but I doubt he will die from it unless there is a bad internal injury or if there is a sever infection that he can't fight off alone. It all depends on you cat. A healthy cat even if they are older will likely be fine as long as infection can be kept at bay. I don't know what kind of ointment for you to get as I don't remember the name or anything. Someone else may be able to help you. Just try to keep the bite clean though he may be doing that himself.

I understand don't having money but you don't have to sit by and watch him die. You can help him along his way to healing. This link may give you some ideas as long as the abscess is open and draining can be treated at home. Him seeing a vet is still a good idea with a bite on the face like this.
