Good morning, welcome to the weekend.

Who was (or were) the band or musician you first used to be obsessed with? Do you still like them now?

I always had quite different taste in music to most of my friends. I was influenced a lot by the music my brother used to listen to and he had a lot of musician friends who were much older and more discerning than us. I didn't like any of the pop my school friends listened to.

I remember think that Iggy Pop was the greatest thing ever when I was about 12 or so. I went to see him play live a couple of times while I was living in the UK. I was also really into Nick Cave, Tom Waits, Lou Reed, Nick Drake and a bunch of blues artists who were mainly all dead by the time I discovered them. All this while most of my friends were listening to The Happy Mondays or New Kids On The Block.

Yeah, I was not very cool in school.

How about you?

I loved the stuff my sister listened to. Some was pop but most were Fleetwood mac type of music.  For some reason I followed Madonna's career for almost 10 years. I had all her photos plastered on my walls. I thought she was one of the most unique people who could change her looks so drasticly. I didn't care for her stuff after the Dancefloor secrets album but growing up I was made fun of and I didn't care. Madonna had it going on and that's who I listened to. I also loved Bruce Hornsby and the range, Prince, Sting, Journey, Asia among a few albums I played repeatedly.

I've always been a bit of an oddball in music--even from a fairly young age, my taste ran to classical/romantic and my favorite composer was/is Tchaikovsky.

That's still my favorite music, but I'm pretty eclectic now.  As far as modern musicians, there's usually a song, sometimes two, that I like, but as far as one that I obsessed over, that'd have to have been Shaun Cassidy, but it was never about his music
.  That sort of thing, I did "outgrow".

New Kids On The Block. I was in 4th or 5th grade when the group made it big and everyone was obsessed with them. I heard that the group has sort of gotten back together and have new songs out. I haven't heard them yet.

The Beatles. I was 5  years old when they came to the USA.  I vividly remember seeing them on the Ed Sullivan show.  First album I ever bought with my own money was their 2nd one.

Yes, still love them!

The one and only Elvis. I was a young teenager when he hit the music scene. What a change from the saccharine popular music of the time. Elvis changed pop music forever - there were no rock stars before Elvis.

when i was in elementary school, my family took a trip to California. my dad was driving us somewhere or another, and had the radio on. California Dreamin' by the Mamas and the Papas came on -- i loved that song, though it took over a decade for me to hear it again and learn it's title and the name of the band. i loved the music of the 60's, unlike most kids my age. and i'd say it was the music of the 60's that i was first obsessed with.

I loved the Mamas and the Papas and still play some of their CDs. Michelle Phillips is sadly the only one of them still alive.

Kiss. I remember being in third grade and my friends and I were obsessed with Kiss. The teacher let us stay in the classroom at recess and use the record player. Those were good times. Do I still love Kiss? Yes but as far as I am concerned, the only lineup that matters is the original- Gene, Paul, Ace and Peter. Anything less is a cover band.

Lately, I am very much into the music of a young Mexican composer named Jorge Mendez. I found him by accident on Youtube and bought both of his albums from BandCamp. Check him out. He is very talented

Predominantly classical music
Prokofiev, Vivaldi,   Khachaturian, Tchaikovsky, Strauss, to name a few *I was so cool I know*

Otherwise, I did have a stint with the Spice Girls. Got their albums, saw their movie, even took part in a cover girl group for a talent show at the mall (I was Baby Spice). I was about 9-10 years old. My first mainstream fandomizing!

After that, during my preteen years, I was interested in JRock (Japanese Rock).

That's so so so long ago.  I did like the Beatles, but the first band I really remember being obsessed with was either Iron Butterfly or Cream.  I tended to obsess on certain songs rather than bands.

Later on, I developed a taste for Gregorian Chant and plainsong, which has lasted to this day, 13th century Japanese flute music, Middle Eastern Folk (that little obsession started with belly dancing classes), some classical, and New Age.  Also Irish traditional.  And bagpipes.  And Jethro Tull.  And folk.  Enya.  Clannad.  Goodness, I'm all over the place.

I came very late to bands/rock music. As a teenager I was obsessed with Frans Brüggen (a recorder player and baroque flautist), but overall tended to go for pieces/composers over musicians (though there were some groups/players I hated!). Pretty much all baroque and renaissance stuff. :geek: I was obsessed with John Dowland (renaissance composer) for the longest time too.

When it comes to modern music, the first band I really loved was the Manic Street Preachers. I discovered them while at uni.

I don't listen to most of this music nowadays - too many painful memories :sigh:

Aerosmith, Guns and Roses, Steppenwolf, and of course my favorite, Cat Scratch Fever by Ted Nugent.( must have predicted my love for cats!) I loved all rock and roll, from the Eagles to Kiss!

Back in 1965....The Monkees.
In my defense, I was 10 years old. And no, I don't listen to them anymore. Although yeah, I was heartbroken when Davy Jones passed away.

I met Dear Richard when I was 12 and that's when I started to listen to Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, etc. I love rock music. Still a big Aerosmith fan. And Deep Purple's Smoke on the Water just rocks.

Obsessed with? Hmmm I guess the first one was that I'd say I was obsessed with was Chicago. Then later on, and to this day, Green Day.

Voltaire is another artist I'm borderline-obsessed with. His songs are rather... hmmm, morbid, I guess you could say. And others have a lot of innuendo. He mentioned playing in Japan (Tokyo is his second favorite place in the world) and no one really understood the songs that were loaded with innuendo.... which is a lot of them, hahaha. If you like morbid with a touch of humor and just different, I highly recommend checking him out.

Here is a Voltaire song that some folks here (or their kids) may be familiar with:

New Kids on the Block. Although I couldn't tell you any of their songs. . .I don't think I was into their actual music. Just THEM---Donnie, Danny, Jordan, Jon and Joey!---because that's what was in at the time. I had a fan book and all that, although I wasn't as into them as some of the other girls. And now I look at Donnie Wahlberg and wonder what I was thinking ;). My niece is really into One Direction, but at least she also likes their music :tongue2:.

As for music, I always liked folk rock like Peter, Paul and Mary or Simon and Garfunkel.

My first crush was also Davy Jones.   I too was saddened with he passed away.

My 2nd David Cassidy.  He's still alive, but his life is pretty sad these days with his drunk driving arrests and other personal problems.

Interestingly, Davy Jones and David Cassidy were in the process of planning to tour together when Davy died. I don't listen to either music these days, but I think seeing them in concert would have been cool.

Yes, Cassidy's in pretty bad shape with all the booze.

I saw where Ian Paice (the drummer for Deep Purple) just had a mini stroke. It's the first time he has ever had to cancel a DP concert since the band formed in 1968; that speaks a lot for the band. I just love Purple, except when they had Coverdale and Hughes as leads. I always liked Ian Gillian more and was glad when he came back to the band; to me, he and Ritchie Blackmore were Deep Purple.
