Hi everyone, 11 days ago I noticed my 14yr old cat Spike seemed to have suddenly lost a lot of weight. The next day, he wasn't eating unless I pushed chicken under his nose. I took him to the vet first thing on the third day (Monday).

There was no sign of UTI. He was very dehydrated so I had to bring him in for sub-q fluids two days in a row and then every other day since. The vet said he might have a tumor, kidney stones or an infection and recommended an ultrasound. Right now he is on antibiotics, pain meds, and an appetite stimulant. I'm trying to give him sub-q fluids at home which I'm really nervous about and he doesn't like.

The ultrasound is scheduled for tomorrow (it was too expensive for me to manage to do right away and money is pretty tight).  And I'm worried about fasting him since he is still not eating much!

I've been reading online and learning a lot, but wanted to connect with some other cat owners dealing with this who can maybe give me a sense of what I can expect. I had another cat which I tried to keep around too long and regretted it so I don't want him to suffer. He has been acting more normal on all the meds, but still not eating like he used to or gaining weight. He also pees all the time and has started going just outside the box. I really love this cat as I'm sure you all understand, and want to do the best thing I can for him. Thanks for reading.

Test results:

These are the ones that seem to be outside of normal. T4 looks normal. IDEXX SDMA is pretty high, but he was also very dehydrated when this test was done. The second set of numbers is reference range.

Having recently lost my third cat to kidney disease, I can sympathize with you.  And I can tell you that when looking at blood results, you need to take them mainly as a whole, not individually.  That being said, however, I do know that the BUN and Creatinine are two figures that I always looked at, and right now Spike's are pretty high.  Hopefully the fluids will help bring them down.  That's what our Vet always told us was the very most important thing we could do...fluids, fluids, fluids.

Now, are you feeding him dry food or wet food.  If possible, feed him wet food, and add more water to his food.  I used to feed from 7 - 9 meals a day to Callie, and added about 1 Tablespoon of water to EACH meal.  Plus she drank from her fountain often. AND she got sub-q fluids.  She didn't like them, but she got them because she needed them
.   She lived for three years after her diagnosis, so I think we did pretty well.

Have you seen this website?  http://www.felinecrf.org/index.htm  This is my "go to" for anything kidney related.  It even discusses fluids and tips and how to give them.  Plus things like nausea, tips on getting them to eat, what to help with constipation, etc, etc, etc.  Of course, we are here to help also.  That website is just some reading when we aren't instantly available.

Hang in there.  It seems daunting, and sometimes it is, but believe me,you aren't alone.  Sadly, MANY of us have been through this and can help you out

Thank you so much for the response, but I got an ultrasound done on him today and turns out he has a pretty aggressive cancer in both his intestines and kidney :(  The vet is going to come by tomorrow to euthanize him before he gets any worse.  Thank you anyway for the encouragement.

I'm so sorry
But what a great cat parent you are by giving him the greatest gift of all....letting him go before he suffers.  This truly is love
