So my boyfriend and I adopted a 5 months old cat more than a month ago. She is 6 months old now and pregnant. Since we live in an appartment on a 3rd floor she never went outside which means she was already pregnant when we got her. I have to mention that she is very small in size. Her paws are big as my thumbs. Afterall she is very young and she probably got pregnent during first heat. Does any of you have experience with such a small in size and young cats being pregnant? Are there any complications I should be ready for? My vet said I shouldn't worry but I wanted to check with some more experienced cat owners like you people of TCS

Thank you :)

I hope I don't offend you by mentioning this, but sometimes, if your cat is very young, it's better for her if you get her spayed in early pregnancy. She might be too small to physically give birth safely, not to mention the strain on her body to grow babies when she is just a baby herself.

Again I mean no offense by saying that.

What a shame that she is pregnant so young.

I have to agree with M mewmommy that a spay/termination might be best, unless she is too far along.

Can you post a picture of her?

Dear @MewMommy none taken. First thing I did when I realised she was pregnant was taking her to vet to spay her but he said that she is too far along. I guess she is since we can see kittens moving in her. And yes, I too feel that this pregnancy is somehow cruel because she is so young and I just don't know what to expect. So, there is alot of different answers but how long since she gives birth since we can see the kittens moving?

Here you can see her better. It took me a while to take this picture since she's quite restless these past few days

About 3 weeks since you begin to feel them move. As you SEE them move, its at most 2 weeks now.   She isnt very big, no fotballs nor even soccer balls there, so the litter is probably small.

Complications?  With Gods help the delivery should go OK.  She has a tiny advantage over more mature first time deliverers - her tendons etc are more elastic, more flexible.   but a common complication is,  her maternity instincts may kick in late.  Ie, you must be prepared to help her with delivery, stand ready to take the kitten out of sacks, cut cords with something blunt, dry them off.   Have a good kmr or goats milk prepared so you arent defenceless is she is late with milk too.  Have a scale so you see the kittens gains properly.

Bth, same preparations to guard against, she must have an emergency Cesarean, and cant nurse them the first day or two...

But after a while her mother instincts should kick in.  Quite a few of these young deliverers ARE good mothers too.

Do the your best in this tricky, difficult situation.  Pray to God and suitable saints, and prepare yourself as well you can.   The guarded one is protected by God, as the proverb says, no?   :)

Thank you @StefanZ. And I agree with you on everything you said.

I was also wondering about often peeing, strog and often gases and dhiarrea in pregnant cats? Does anyone have any experience with this?
We've been feeding her with same high quality kitten food ever since we noticed she was pregnent and she loves it but these gases are killing us and I have to clean her litter box every single day because is F U L L!

I also agree with everything that StefanZ StefanZ has told you. The smells are probably from the hormonal changes occurring in her body.

BUT, has she been de-wormed yet by the vet? Worms can also cause strong smelling poop. She can be safely wormed while pregnant.

She's de-wormed so when it comes to all of this peeing I just asume that the kittens are pressing her bladder.

So... now it's a waiting game? At least two weeks StefanZ said. We'll go crazy

I have a VERY small stray that delivered and raised two litters before I finally caught her and had her spayed. Her little paws are that tiny too, she is two years old now and still half the size of a normal cat. I call her my tiny munchkin. She had three kittens in each litter. I worried so because she did this completely on her own. I just wanted you to know they CAN safely deliver and to let you know I'll pray for her to be OK. Thank you for giving her such a wonderful home, she is so lucky to have you!  PS Stress, pregnancy and different foods cause that awful gas and diarrhea, that will all clear up in time, I've had many cats that have done the same thing, but it took up to 6 months to clear.

Yes, it is because she is probably drinking more water too. And I think a couple more weeks as well, if you are seeing kitten movement. The waiting part is never easy!

I'm glad I didn't offend you.

Well, it seems you're going to have babies soon! The advice the more experienced members have given is excellent as usual.

The only things I can think to add are:

I think you should make a huge effort to be with her when she goes into labor. Most cats will choose their person, and will seek out that person when their time comes. I had one give birth literally in my lap (yuck). That chair was never the same...

She may need help, as in get help, if the kittens are too large to pass through the birth canal. You can exceedingly gently pull a baby out of and only if you time it with a contraction...but if inexperienced, that can harm a baby. I have done it many times, but I've had cats all my life and have been assisting mamas since I was eight.

Until then, I would feed her the best kitten food you can afford. She's growing herself and her babies, and as such needs quality nutrients and plenty of calories. KMR would not be inappropriate at this time.

Thank you for taking in this little mama! ^.^

M mewmommy I made her a nesting spot in which she is not really interested. She loves our two sofas so I hope I woun't see the same scenario as you with your chair. Altough you made me laugh [emoji]128514[/emoji] Btw, I'm feeding her best kitten food that is in stores here in Croatia and I'm trying to give her some kitten milk but she's not really interested.

You mean such a treat milk as Whiskas is making?   If you can get goats milk, its much better.   The price is probably roughly the same, but goats milk is really good supplement - you can even use it as emergency  kmr, without any problems.

Plain unsweetened youghurt is too useful as extra supplement for cats.

StefanZ StefanZ I offered her both but she is only interested in cow milk which is causing her very strong gases so I'm not giving it to her anymore. She is getting bigger and bigger. Altough pictures seem not to be relevant I feel as if there are many more kittens that one would expect. But we'll see.

Right, we dont not recommend cow milk - because of exactly this what you have experienced.  Some cats do manage cow milk OK, but many not.

But youghurt is easier to digest.  Probably raw cow milk ie unpasteurized, is a little better than the pasturized you buy in shops.

Goats milk is always OK - its a little peculiar, because the lactose contend is almost the same, but cats do manage it nicely.

So its just to try again, and entice her.... :)

Buffalo milk and sheep milk may also be tried. No garanty of success, but less dangerous than cow milk.
