Labor Question

I rescued a stray kitty who is pregnant. Took to vet and was confirmed to be about 2-3 weeks away from delivering. I've been watching her closely and have confined her to a bedroom as I have 2 other male rescues. She is pretty hateful and has gotten nasty for no reason a few times with me so I keep her separate from the males as I am afraid someone will get hurt. I've not been able to feel her belly as she won't let me touch anything but her head. Lol.

Anyways I've seen some bloody show for a while now, but today I came home and there was a lot of it all over the carpet and a blanket she lays on. I found her in her box we made her. When I saw her, she was eating something yellow and then I lifted her leg and saw what I can only explain as a blob of blood (almost like a sac). Anyhow she ate it. She continued to act like she was in labor as she was moving continuously and trying to get comfy. At this point she was allowing me to pet her stomach and back. She rested for a little bit and has been active like nothing ever happened. She is eating, going to potty and even jumping up and down on a dresser. I tried to stay in room with her but she was literally doing circles around the twin bed in the room by going over top of me, between the wall and under the bed and all over again.

I'm concerned that I've interrupted her or that the other cats in the house obviously knowing something is up and meowing at her door, grabbing door knob has upset her.

Any advice? Should I take her to get in morning? This is my first time and I am worried about her. I feel like the blood blob thing I saw was abnormal and her eating something like a yellow blob was weird. Tia!

Thank you for rescuing her!

It sounds like she passed her mucus plug, and some bloody discharge as well.

There can possibly be a few days between passing the plug and having kittens.

However, you mentioned bloody show. Is she still bleeding? If so, how much?

Can you tell if the kittens have dropped lower yet in her belly?

She is still having a little bit of blood, like where she sits it will sometimes leave a spot.

The blob she passed earlier was big, it was like it was a sac the size of something you would imagine a kitten was in.

I can't tell if they've dropped lower.

I think you should call the vet tomorrow and ask if you should get her looked at. She doesn't sound in distress, but it can't hurt to call. Sounds like there was an undeveloped kitten that needed passing after the plug came out. Hopefully everything else is okay.

Well, took her to vet and they did X-ray. She isn't pregnant, she has pyometra and they suggested spaying her right away. I guess it's a blessing in some ways as now I don't have to figure out what to do with the kittens, but was excited for my girls to see the whole process. Please pray she makes it through the surgery and recovers.

Oh, goodness!

She should hopefully make a full recovery. The spay surgery cleans it out. They should send her home with 7-10 days of antibiotics in case any infection remains in her body, as pyometra can be very serious.

So glad you took her in today!

When will you get word? Will they be keeping her overnight?

They said she should be able to go home. It depends on what they find. Surgery would be this afternoon. Hate that I didn't know she was sick all this time. Maybe this explains her hatefulness and not allowing me to touch anything but her head.

I think you are right. She did not feel well. Poor gal.

Let us know how she is later.

You're not the first person to believe their cat was pregnant only to find out it was pyometra.  So glad you took her in.  You saved her life!

Surgery went well. They gave her an injection of antibiotic that is supposed to work for 14 days. Never heard of such a thing, but they said they do it for strays. I'm glad I don't have to try to give it to her. I did get pain meds and I hope they are enough to give her relief. I worry she may be in pain.

I have noticed something weird though. I have had many animals over the years who have had surgery and have never seen them act the way she is acting. She is extremely clingy, hyper and won't let me out of her site. I had to sleep with her last night and she is beside me now for the night. She has to be touching me at all times. I get up to leave room and she literally chases me and gets upset. Before surgery she was very hateful. Has anyone experienced this? Is it anything to be concerned about?

No, poor kitty. Nothing to be concerned about. Going to the vet for surgery has made her insecure. She was frightened. Continue to comfort her. She is looking for closeness to ease her anxieties. She's had major surgery. She needs you now. She'll get better with time. Bless her heart.

The long-acting shot should do it. And the pain meds are important. She's very bonded to you. Enjoy it and go with it. She needs you!
