Hello.  I have a 20 year old female Tonkanese.  She's been on medication to treat kidney disease for about 5 years,  She also began blood pressure medication about 8 or 9 months ago to treat high blood pressure.  She had radio active thyroid treatment about 5 years ago. All of this has kept her health stable, until recently.  Her latest visit to the vet (about 3 weeks ago) revealed that her kidneys are failing now and her potassium levels are plummeting.  The vet feels she's going to need a potassium supplement and subcutaneous fluids. Of course, I, like many, don't know how far I should go in pumping her with medicine and treatments - just because I can, should I?

Meanwhile, she is barely eating.  She still nibbles on her dry food, of which I keep an eternal bowl available to her.  But when I say nibble, I mean nibble and it's not enough.  She is snubbing almost every kind of moist food I put in front of her, including tuna and tuna water.  Does anyone have any ideas on how to get her to eat more?

Have you tried a appetite stimulant? Have you tried the Friskies? I don't know what they put in that stuff but man most cats love it

I have tried Friskies.  She's not interested.  I haven't tried the appetite stimulant, but I'm calling her vet tomorrow and may go that route  However, that seems a temporary fix.  No?

At that age, everything is probably a temporary fix.
I had a cat nearing 19 years old.  From someone on this site, I got a recommendation to try sliced deli turkey (organic), and he loved it.  It's obviously not great or complete nutrition for a cat, but it kept him eating.  Have you tried baby food?  Chicken or turkey, no spices or onions added, of course.  Look at Beechnut or Gerbers 2nd.

I'm going through the same issue with my 18 year old cat Skunk.  He has FIV, diabetes and chronic kidney disease.  I just posted in that thread called "senior cat, is it time?" if you want to check it out for some tips and thoughts.  I also recommend checking out www.felinecrf.org.  The subcutaneous fluids and potassium supplements are fairly easy once you get used to them.  Sending hugs your way!
