I've been fostering some kittens. A few had some gunky eyes/infections. Went to vet, gave me teramycin all but one cleared within a day or two with no further problems. The one that did not clear up actually became hazy. Over the week of using th teramycin and amoxicillin as prescribed he has gotten worse. I took him back to the vet and he said his eye was badly damaged and to keep giving teramycin it really seems to continue to get worse. He has a cloudy spot in his eye and red tissue in bottom. Does he need a different kind of medicine? Is it keratitis? The vet just looked at them both times I took them in.and said same meds something just does not seem right. He says it might need to be removed or even if it gets better there will be scarring and blindness :(

I think I might take him to a different Vet.  Is that an option?  Or because you are fostering, do you have to take them all to a specific Vet?  How old are these kittens?  Are they wee babies?  If under 6 weeks, I can see if anyone in the kitten Forum can help.

They are 6.5 weeks. I am paying for everything and do not have money to take them to another vet. I tried to get donations but it didn't work out. I took him off the meds and eye is doing better, could be be allergic? Going to get some kitten eye drops and wash and keep a watch on him until I can figure out What to do.

@sarthur2, do you know of something OTHER than teramycin for this little one's eyes?  It seems to be making things worse?

Take him off the terramycin for sure, which I think you already did!

red top rescue red top rescue recently posted about her experience with a kitten's eye that had a similar problem. While we wait for her to respond, I'll look for the thread.

yes. It's been a few days now he has been off the terramycin. It is hard to tell if the eye is improving on its own, I'm not sure if it is wishful thinking or if it is getting better but I can see his other eye again and at the end of treating with terramycin I could almost no longer see the eye at all.. I got some Eye wash today.still on stand by.I wish I could have taken pictures but he is camera shy. Always looks away or is too blurry I did get some of before when he was on the meds.

He is active and a bit bigger than the rest of the kittens. He plays just fine and everything none of the kittens are sneezing or anything either.I will try to get some new pictures today.

I went to check on him and his eye was gunned shut. Used the eye wash and cleaned it up. Something I noticed is that where he use to have the reddish tissue coming up at the bottom of the eye now he no longer has that but now on the side of his eye on the edge is like greyish. I'm not sure how to describe it. There has to be something to help him.

If he actually had a corneal ulcer, then blood vessels need to grow in and cover the ulcer in order to heal it.  Once it is healed, the blood vessels will usually fade away, but that hapens faster if you use a drop with steroid in it (and you should never use those in an eye with anulcer because it will prevent the blood vessels from growing in to repair the ulcer.  What you really need to do at this point is take that kitten in to the vet and have them stain the eye with fluorescein dye.  They will then rinse out the eye and see if the dye has stuck to anything.  If not, then you can get drops that include a steroid along with the antibiotics and tht will help the eye heal faster.  If there IS still an ulcer, then antiviral ointment may be needed.  If there is no longer any yellow gunk coming out of the eye, leaving off the terramycin is fine.  It could be that this cat is sensitive to terramycin.  It's only an antibacterial.  Anyhow, you do need to get this kitten checked by a vet if the eye stays cloudy for any length of time.  It can be clear in a few days with the right drops as long as there is no ulcer.

The vet never said anything about an ulcer. He just said kittens get eye infections and that's needed to keep with the terramycin 6 times a day. (this was the second trip back when I told him about the other kittens getting better and this guy looked worse to me)

I think you should read Post #13 again carefully. I think what red top rescue red top rescue is telling you is that a dye test in the eye can better determine what is going on, and if your kitten can have different medicine - specifically eye drops with a steroid to assist healing.

It sounds like your vet unfortunately has little experience with eye issues.

I understand money being tight. Maybe you could call and ask how much it would be to perform the dye test.

Poor little guy! He sure is cute! I love black cats!

Keep us posted as to how his eye is doing please!
