Hi, my kitten is blind. He will be 6 weeks old tomorrow, I plan on keeping him. He was born from my female cat (I plan on getting her done). He was in a litter of two but unfortunately the other kitten didn't make it past a day. We went to the vets two weeks ago as his eyes were sticking together and when they were open I didn't think I could see any eyes. However when I took him to the vets, they assumed me he had eyes, but he was albino so he may be blind. After studying him for hours upon hours it's clear he is in fact blind.

This does not deter me from raising him and loving him I just want to stress this (I've already started his pet insurance). I am worried though about how his life will be. I plan on moving soon, and I worry it will confuse him with new surroundings. His mother will be staying at home with my parents, but I will be able to take him to see her often.

Does anybody have any information, advice or experience with this that could help me?

Thank you in advance.

Thank you for taking care of this little one, and sorry to hear about his litter mate.

I think my advice may not be what you want to hear.  I would not take the kitten away from his mother.  I think leaving a blind kitten with a mother that its bonded to is a wonderful thing to do for it, and I wouldn't remove him.  I also wouldn't take him to travel.  Even though you love him, I think the best thing to do for him is to give him a very stable environment.  Visits would be incredibly disorienting.  Is it possible to keep them together?  Or not move them?

Mom and the kitten can both be fixed when the kitten is 8 weeks old.

Look up Oskar the Blind Cat to see how well a blind cat can live.  Also, check out Blind Cat Rescue and Sanctuary.  A blind cat can live a perfectly normal and happy life just like a seeing cat does.  Of course, your kitty will need to be an indoor-only cat to protect him from predators and generally safety.  Blind cats run, play, climb, jump and all that stuff. He doesn't know he's blind.  Play with him using toys that make noise so he can track it with his ears.  You'll be amazed at how well he will do.  If you're keeping his mom and also bring her indoors, she might end up being a seeing-eye cat for him.

Not all albino cats are blind, but it sounds like you have determined that he cannot see. He can live a very normal life indoors, however, and will adjust to a new environment in time.
