I have no idea where he came from, or how he got here...

On Wednesday, my youngest son swore to me that he heard a kitten underneath our shop area. I came out, trying to see, and eventually glimpsed shiny little eyes.

I went in and opened a can of tuna, then sat outside by an opening that led under the shop. It didn't take long before a tiny orange face peeked out and investigated the offering.

After he started eating, I grabbed him up. Oh, he was MAD. Hissing and spitting and cussing me out in Kitten, I ignored my scratches and wrapped him burrito-style in a towel and brought him into my room.

It took him only about an hour to calm down enough to eat, and not jump every time he heard a noise.

24 hours later he uses the litter box without fail and cuddles up to me to sleep.

My questions are thus: there is no way this baby was feral with this reaction, is there?

If that's the case, somebody dumped this 4-6 week old kitten by a busy 65mph highway...

His name is Mew and he has a home now.

He might have been born feral. 4-6 weeks is the ideal age to socialize a feral kitten---if over 8 weeks most will never become fully tame. So at his age I would expect to see fast improvement. But true ferals rarely abandon their babies, so either he was hiding in a car and went for a ride or something happened to his mama :(. Or you may be right, he could have been dumped, no way to know for sure.

I haven't seen...evidence of a mother cat, living or otherwise.

He is a complete and total sweetie, though, and has attached himself to me as his mother. He tried to nurse my ear, so that makes me believe that he'd been nursing not too far in the past. I'm very good with animals and have rescued kittens before, so I know what to do to keep him healthy.

I was just wondering if a true feral baby could attach himself to a human mom so quickly. One of my other cats got in and investigated him, and Mew (the baby) started trying to nurse on him....Tinnin was less than amused but didn't do anything other than sniff.

I really didn't NEED a fifth kitty but apparently the powers that be decided otherwise!

He sounds like he would really go for KMR from a bottle from you.  It's hard telling how exactly he got there underneath your husbands outdoor shop, but if there is not mother and other kittens around, I would say you have found yourself a sweet new family member.  Since as you said, you have had this type of experience before, your new addition should be easier for you.  Please keep up updated on how Mew is doing, and of course any questions, this is the place for them.

Mew eats wet kitten food and steals my older cats' crunchies. I figure it won't hurt him and encourages his teething, so I let him. He has a slight eye infection that I was given terramycin for, so he's still a little runny eyed. He drinks water and flat refuses kmr, but eats well enough.

He plays, climbs, jumps, uses a litter box, and generally is a happy little baby. I think he's happy he has a home, he seems to love people, especially my 5yo daughter.

Hi , your kitty is beautiful! So luck to of found a loving home
I rescued 2 feral kittens brother and sister at around 11-12 weeks old they had never known humans ! It took me a month to get them calm and relaxed around others . I was told they would probably never be very tame because of there age I rescued them but they are 1year and 4 months now and they are so loving ! Hazel is still a bit timid around new faces but her brother loves everyone!
I'm sure you got mew just in time and I'm sure he's going to be a fantastic pet

I rescue abandoned/lost feral kittens quite often and every time they're under 8 weeks old they attach to people within hours of being caught. They're very impressionable when they're babies and kindness goes along way in their little hearts I believe.
I once saved a little tailless girl at about 4 weeks who's mother had been ran over and she turned out to have spino bifida, I had to give her at least two baths daily and carry her around in a towel for an hour after each bath and through every bit of it all she ever did was purr.
I honestly sometimes believe the feral babies make the best pets in the long run, they just have a special love for their humans.
