Hi all,

I have a persian kitten,

yesterday I was cooking salmon and he stole a piece of raw salmon and ate it.

I never gave him raw meat and he was tested negative for parasites, But now I am worried he gets worms/parasites.

I hate worms :(

Do you guys have any clue if he may get any parasites by eating a little raw salmon?

Thanks,

Your kitten is fine
Raw meats and fish can be fed to cats as treats as long as the meat is bought from a reputable source. If you feed raw meats and fish as treats, keep it to no more than 10% of the diet to avoid throwing your kitten's nutrients off.

If your kitten seems to like eating raw fish and meats you may want to consider a raw diet. This is not as simple as throwing some raw meat into a bowl. There are commerical raw pet foods you can buy or you can make raw food yourself using one of the many methods out there from recipes to frankenprey to premixes. There's a forum here on TCS that discusses raw diets: http://www.thecatsite.com/f/65/raw-amp-home-cooked-cat-food

thanks for your reply. It is a relief for me.

The fish I bought from supermarket in Gemrnay but it was not frozen at all.

I was so concerned because my kitten goes to my bed and every where in the house and am afraid he makes us sick.

Thanks,

Most fish sold in the US (unless you went right down to the dock to buy it :D) is flash-frozen on the boat for ease of transport (even if you buy it thawed). This will kill any parasites. Even if the fish was never frozen, the chances of your cat getting tapeworms from fleas is way higher than the chance of getting parasites from raw fish.

I don't know how they handle fish in Germany :/. But I imagine most processes are industry-wide and not specific to the country. If you're really worried you can ask the vet for a de-wormer to give to the kitty.

I've been told that most parasites present in fish are visible on the meat. So if you didn't see any crawlies I think you're safe :D. Raw fish isn't quite the same as raw poultry/meat, sometimes the effects are different .
