Hi, I have a 10 year old cat with elevated BUN and Creatinine levels. I've been thinking for a long time now to buy a water fountain for him but I'm not sure if it is really necessary.  He actually drinks tons of water, ever since he was a kitten, of course due to his kidney problems he has started to drink more for the last couple of years. Also I always give him wet food with extra water. (He eats both dry and wet)

Well I actually wouldn't overthink about this and just buy him one but unfortunately I'm a student who is not in a very good financial condition and the water fountains are really expensive in my country (Turkey).

So I wanted to know your ideas about this. Would it help to get a water fountain for a CKD cat who already drinks a lot of liquid? Do you have any experiences with this?

Thank you very much

I think water fountains can help entice cats just because it's moving and generates more interest than still water that, by animal logic, would suggest it could be stagnant. If you find the commercial fountains are too expensive, have you considered buying a pump and making your own? There are quite a few different ways people do it, but it's essentially just a bowl/bucket/container with a pump!

Thank you :) I've heard about these home made water fountains but I haven't really looked into it because I thought they were more complicated to make. But this is really easy, so much more make sense to do it at home than giving all that money I guess.

I did find that having a fountain encouraged my cat with CKD to drink more water.  I was not able to to subQ fluids with this cat as it would have been impossible to insert the needle and then keep it there for a sufficient amount of time, so the fountain came in handy. I hope your baby will be okay.

Thank you, I hope your baby will be better too. My cat is actually doing quite good, his blood values are just a little bit up. But unfortunately he is also FIV+. so I expect his values will worsen in any case. But he is really in a very good shape considering all of his problems. Hope this will stay more or less the same.

I had a fountain for my kidney cat, plus two other cats.  I found that ONLY my kidney cat ever drank from the fountain.  The two others simply wouldn't drink from it.  Reason I am telling you this is that not every cat will drink from a fountain.  If your cat is already drinking plenty from the bowls you have around the house, then maybe you don't need to invest in a fountain.  Does your little one like drinking from the faucet?  If so, then he'd probably enjoy having a fountain, but if not, then he probably wouldn't use it.  My kidney cat always drank from the faucets....that's why we got the fountain in the first place, just 'cause we got tired of her always begging for us to turn on the faucets.  That was long before she ever developed kidney disease.

No, he never drinks from the faucet. Also he is a super cautious cat, always very suspicious towards new things. This is one of the reasons that I'm not sure if I should buy a fountain or not. But I decided to just make one myself rather than buying one, even if he never drinks from it, maybe the others (I have four cats in total) will benefit.
