i'm relatively new to raw feeding. my three cats have been doing very well, enjoying their raw meals (with alnutrin added).

the area we haven't got 'running smoothly' is with the fish oil. note that i add the fish oil to individual meals, for each of the cats.

now, our jaspurr loves the icelandic brand sardine-anchovy oil -- so no problem there. but...our deedee doesn't particularly care for it (or fish in general). with deedee, i've started with one drop twice daily, and am now up to two drops of the sardine-anchovy oil twice daily -- so we seem to be heading in the right direction there.

the bigger issue is with our punkin, who simply does not like the sardine-anchovy oil at all. one drop mixed thoroughly into her meal, means she simply won't eat it. but when i fix the same exact meal without the oil, she's happily and enthusiastically eating. i'd considered trying either krill oil or fish oil capsules for punkin, to find a 'type or form' of fish oil that she likes or tolerates enough to consistently eat when mixed into her raw meals. but i also have a pouch of green lipped mussel powder, from HT. i was looking over at the Food Fur Life/EZComplete website, and noticed that EZComplete uses green lipped mussels for/as the source of it's omega 3's.

so i'm wondering if i could try using the green lipped mussel powder instead of the fish oil for our punkin, for her omega 3's...?

here's the product webpage at HT for the green lipped mussel powder -- https://hare-today.com/product/other/green_lipped_mussel_powder   and the analysis gives info on dosage. punkin is between approx. 8 and 8 1/2 lbs right now (she's 10 months old, as of today). so based on this -- '2000 mg of GLM [approximate 1 level teaspoon] contains 71.4 mg Omega-3 fatty acid (EPA / DHA) The recommended dosage of omega-3 for dogs and cats varies by weight. For every 30 pounds of body weight, give 1,000 mg fish oil containing 300 mg of EPA/DHA combined. If feeding GLM at 1 teaspoon per day you would also feed fish oil and offset the dosage of the fish oil by 71.4 mg.' -- the correct daily dose for our punkin would be 80mg/day -- based on weight of 8lbs. this would translate to 1 teaspoon plus 1/8th teaspoon per day -- which comes to 80.325 mg omega-3 fatty acid (EPA/DHA).

since the HT product page for the green lipped mussel powder does say that 'There is no risk of toxicity...', i went ahead and used a bit less than 1/4 tsp as a topper on our punkin's meal before bedtime last night. i wanted to see if she would accept it, eat her meal with it. and, punkin ate all of her meal, no problem at all.

this morning, i served punkin and deedee their breakfasts with an even 1/4 tsp green lipped mussel powder as topper, and they both ate their meals happily.

i've emailed tracy at HT, to ask her opinion on this. i'll post her reply, when i receive it.

Yep. A lot of raw feeders use GLM as an omega over fish oils and GLM is typically well liked by cats. Per the raw feeding for IBD FB group it looks likethe average dosage of GLM is 500mg day. If you aren't a member you might want to join and ask your question over there. The mods are former members here and incredibly smart and well versed in raw feeding supplements.

thank you -- so very much!

yes, my punkin has no objections to the GLM at all -- eats her meals fine with it.

i'll hop on over to facebook, join the group, and ask my question there.
