I have a two day old kitten. The mother passed yesterday from labor complications. Ive been feeding her kitten formula. Yesterday she was very active and meowing and weighed 75 grams. Today shes lethargic and isnt meowing as much. Any advise would be amazing. Im completely devistated about the loss of mommy cat and im so scared of losing this baby.

Which formula are you feeding the kitten? How much and how often? Are you feeding the kitten tummy down, head up, using a needleless syringe?

Are you stimulating the kitten to go wee and poop after feeding? Are you feeding through the night?

How much does the kittten weigh today?

I'm sorry you lost the mom.

PetAg powdered formula. I usually give her an eye dropper or two full every two to three hours. I havent slept in two days.

Yes I stimulate her to potty.

The kitten weighs 70 grams today.

How much is an eye dropper full?

She needs 1.5-2 mLs per feeding every 2 hours.

However, if she is faltering, she needs 1 mL every single hour until she is stable.

If she is lethargic, applying honey to her gums should stimulate her to eat better.

It's really touch and go with a kitten this age, especially one who has lost her mom. Did she get a chance to nurse at all before mom passed?

I understand no sleep. That is the sacrifice we make to keep a kitten going. It's so hard!

Are you keeping her warm at all times using a heating pad set on low under a blanket? Or a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel set next to her? Kittens must stay warm. They cannot regulate their own body temp for 3 weeks. They must be warm to eat and digest. The formula must be warm too.

Does she pee when stimulated? Has there been any poo yet?

Keep doing what you are doing. Hopefully she will turn the corner and thrive soon!

Feed her 1mL every hour and see if she improves. God bless!

I'm here for more questions or concerns!

By the way, PetAg is best, so it's good that is what you are using.

Because this baby only weighs 70 grams, she is critical. That is a very low birth weight. I suggest 1mL every hour for now. Put honey on her gums before every feeding.

Is she fully furred? Or does she appear somewhat bald and premature?

Thank you for your efforts to save her.

Sigh ... I'm so very sorry. It sounds like she was premature. That, or she and her mom both had an incurable illness. You tried. At least she was loved and comforted during her last hours. It's so sad to lose both mom and baby.

RIP mama and baby, over the Rainbow Bridge - together. Run free!

God bless! [emoji]128149[/emoji]

I am so sorry! This is sad. What a precious little angel.

Do you know what caused mom's death? Did she hemorrhage? Did you see a vet?

As sad as you are, this is kitten season, and there are so many orphan kittens and pregnant moms who need fostering and adopting right now. If you are interested and willing, you could pay it forward by fostering and/or adopting. Shelters are in such great need. New life can help the grieving process. Please think about it.

My thoughts are with you. I've been there.

Momma was in perfect health. My sister has some maternal magic because she somehow revived the kitten.

The kitten is alive?

I suggest honey on its gums, a heating pad, and 1 mL every single hour!

My sister is magic or something. The second she took her she came around. She just ate a ml of formula and is asleep.

The kitten is critical based on birthweight. Continue with keeping it warm and giving 1 mL hourly, plus stimulating gently for pee and poop, as mom would have done.

It needs to begin gaining weight. Warmth is critical. Wake the kitten for feedings every hour. This is very important!

Using a warm, damp cottonball, you gently rub the kitten's genitals. It should pee and/or poop.

Do this before and after every single feeding.

Sure. Just make sure you rub very gently so the kitten does not get irritated or chapped. Buy cotton balls tomorrow. Also buy clear pedialyte. And A&D diaper ointment. You'll probably end up needing both.

I'm sure you'll do fine. Is your "magic" sister around to help?
