When I took my girl to the vet for the first time about a month ago, they gave us a free dose of the Revolution flea and heart worm medication. It seems fairly pricey, but the vet has a deal where if you purchase nine treatments, you get three treatments for free which equals to a full year of treatment.

My question is, is Revolution worth the cost? Since it can only be purchased through a vet it seems like it's fairly high-quality stuff. Still, this is my first run with a cat of my own so I really don't know too much about the ins and outs of flea medication. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I think Revolution is probably the best available IMO.  You have to get it from the vet because of the heartworm part of it.  That part is actually a prescription medication so it has to come from a vet.

I like Revolution the best for cats. It protects against heartworm, which cats can get from mosquito bites, which is really important because heartworm isn't treatable in cats. And also, it's very safe. They've done lots of studies where they used many times the recommended dose on cats and had no ill effects. There are a couple dog breeds that are more likely to have a genetic defect that makes Revolution not the best choice for them, but cats do really well on it. Over the counter medications are much riskier and not as effective. It's not always the case that the pricier product from the vet is the best option, but for Revolution, I really think it is.

Especially because you live in Florida with so many bugs, it's definitely worth it to apply Revolution year-round!

You can buy Revolution and other flea / parasite preventatives online. A prescription may be required but you usually just need to provide the phone number of the vet.

One of my cats uses Revolution. She's never had a problem with fleas or anything. My other cat is allergic to Revolution so he's on Heartgard which doesn't take care of fleas but he's indoors only.

I found the best price for Revolution online from the Drs Foster & Smith site.  It's what I prefer to use, but I've got one kitty who can't tolerate it.  Not sure what I'm going to use on her this year.
