Hey Guys I have been browsing the  forum and learning a lot from you guys. So first things first. Thank you all for your contributions because they have really helped me.

So my question is, I am adopting a cat next week (probably a kitten 6 months) and in order to have everything ready I was doing my research.

Unfortunately before doing my research I bought some supplies, one of them was food.

As a previous dog owner (dog is no longer with me) I thought I new and went to get some grain free kibble, but after finding this site now I'm confused because I should feed canned, this is better correct?

So there are not many premium canned foods where I live, I can get whiskas, Purina's felix, or Purina's Fancy Fest, maybe also hills and Royal Canin but very expensive those 2

My old dog food supplier sold me Orijen food and he can get Orijen and Acana kibble, but no canned food.

So now I am wondering, if Orijen or Acana Kibble or Purina's Fancy Feast (the one I figuered was the best among "economical" food but feel free to recommend another one)

Can you please recommend which one to feed? Maybe mix them?

If it matters I bought a water fountain to help hydration but from what i read it won't replace wet food.

Thanks!!!

Feeding both would be fine. I wouldn't recommend mixing them together, but feeding them at separate meal times. While an all wet diet is better, a mix of the two is often preferable for convenience since wet food shouldn't be left out for too long. It depends greatly on how much you want to spend and what your schedule is like.

Great thanks for your response!

So Is it better to feed purina's canned to Orijen dry kibble? Really? I mean Orijen's or Acana's quality is huge, but I don't know how important the hydration factor is, when the cat has access to a fountain 24/7.

Please advise! Thanks

Its a toss up. I personally can't feed an all wet diet.

With Fancy Feast the classic pates are best. The other types have grains in them- corn and/or wheat.

The quality of Orgin/Arcana is high. If you are in US- be warned that they are changing their production location and making the food lower quality tho.

The main problem with a dry diet even with a fountain is that a cat's body is made to get most of the moisture it needs from food. Think of birds/mice/etc these are very moist meals when eaten raw.  Cats just aren't driven to drink enough even with fountains because their biology isn't set up this way.

My cats eat Nutrisca for dry. For wet, they eat Weruva, Sheba, Fancy Feast classics, and Nutro.

In general, I'd recommend getting more than one wet food option because even with the best quality foods there can be recalls or shortages that might make it unavailable. Transitioning a cat if something ends up being discontinued can be a huge pain. If you have trouble finding foods in your area, there are online sites that deliver cat food. I use Chewy.com.

If feeding an all-wet diet is an option, I would definitely do that.  Low-quality wet is better than high-quality dry!  Of course, feeding dry is a lot more convenient and also less expensive than feeding wet, so many of us feed some dry.  Make sure that you have at least three scheduled feedings throughout each day (if you want to feed dry, perhaps designate one of these "meals" for dry food).

Fancy Feast Classic varieties (the pates) are a really good value, considering that they are grain-free and low-carb.  Sheba pates are similar, and also around that price point.  (I personally feed both of these brands.)  Avoid the fish flavors.

If you haven't visited and read Dr. Pierson's website yet, I highly recommend that you do!: http://catinfo.org/

It's great that you have a water fountain!  We recently got one in our household as well.  Just make sure that you clean it as specified in the manual (most likely weekly) and replace the filters when you are supposed to.  If you want to increase your kitty's water intake, you can also mix a little bit of filtered water into their wet food to give it a more soupy consistency (not all cats like this, but mine do!).

Two Purina Friskies options that are corn free and wheat free and are inexpensive are 1) Mixed Grill Pate and 2) Turkey & Giblets Pate.  Particularly, the Purina Turkey & Giblets formula is very similar to the Fancy Feast turkey pate.
