When I looked on Google that came up as first possible problem, so I agree with you as a possible cause . It could be something else too. Vet needs to notified though to get a full check.Could be a rectal prolapse but without having any more details the issue could be anything. The cat definitely needs to be seen by a vet ASAP. The fact that the issue has been there for at least a few weeks and your friend has not taken the cat to the vet at all is concerning. Infection can set in and / or the problem may become even worse. No one here on TCS can diagose what the exact problem is. All we can do is recommend a trip to the vet.
