Neuter complication

I just adopted two kittens that had just been neutered (about 8 weeks old). I brought them home 2 days after the surgery and noticed that the wound where 1 had been neutered had opened and was bleeding. It was very swollen and much bigger than the other kittens. I brought him to the vet and they sent him home after closing it up and said with rest the swelling should go back down. Long story short it started bleeding again and we took him back to the vet where he has now been for 2 days. The bleeding has stopped and he is eating and using the litter box normally but the swelling has only gone down minimally.

The vet is telling us that the kitten has a hematoma and blood clotting disorder. Now they are monitoring him at their facility and keeping him calm to get rest. I was just wondering if anyone has heard of anything like this with kittens and whether there is something more we should be doing. This is a new vet for me and I am considering taking him elsewhere to get a second opinion.

Thanks!

They wanted to until the swelling/hematoma goes down. They are afraid it may burst on us. I'm feeling so bad for the little guy. I hate to question the skills/knowledge of the vet but it has been hard to get much information and it seems like they are really unsure of what is going on. That being said I'm sure this is a very unique situation but I also slightly wonder if something happened during the surgery they are trying to cover.

No, it sounds to me like they are very knowledgeable and doing the most they can. A hematoma is a bruise, and if his blood is not clotting properly, then the bruise would get larger. Your vet is being very cautious keeping him overnight so they can watch him. If the bleeding doesn't stop, there are drugs they can give him to help the blood clot.

It sounds to me they are playing it safe for you and your kitty.  It's important for him to be on cage rest and for them to monitor the hematoma.  He's in a good place and your vet is doing a great job.

Thank you for the input. My fiancé and I are very worried for the little guy and what a blood clotting disorder would mean for his long-term health.

Just take it one step at a time. If there is a blood-clotting disorder, the vet can advise you. People live with it all the time.

This may well be a one off unusual complication from the neuter rather than some type of clotting disorder.
