My 9 year old tabby, George, was just diagnosed with FIV.  The diagnosis comes as we investigate why he isn't recovering from an infection on his chin.  Turns out his body isn't fighting the infection.  He's fine on antibiotics right now, and we're waiting for more lab results.  But I'm worried about my George.  I'm very frightened that he won't be with me for much longer.

Thank you for reading.

Many FIV cats live long lives, even as long as non-fiv cats.  He may be more prone to infections, but talk to your vet, give him good nutrition and at least twice a year checkups.  You can have him for many more years.

I don't think so.  He's had an infection for nearly a month now and he's not recovering.  He itches at it and it bleeds and I can hear him mewl in pain sometimes when he does.  On antibiotics he acts mostly normal, we can play together, but a couple days off of them and he becomes feverish and doesn't move and refuses to eat.

The vet said his body isn't fighting the infection and is waiting for results of a biopsy on the infection site to come back.

I'm frightened he's already been sick for some time and this is reaching a critical stage.

Is he okay? Percival is asking about him.
