Hi! I have been feeding my cat 1/2 cup dry food each day divided in two meals and a quarter of a can of wet food as a midnight snack.

The vet said he is a bit chubby so he suggested for us to give him 1/3 cup dry food for one meal and the quarter can of wet food as a second meal.

I have started today but he is almost finished the dry food and his next meal is is at 9pm (12 hour gap). I was worried if he would get too hungry.

I feel like it's too little of a meal. What are your opinions?

He is 1 year old and 7 months, indoor cat. I also try to play with him for 10 minutes in the morning and 10 minutes at night.

Please share any tips and/or your own feeding schedules :) Any opinions are welcomed.

Thanks

PS

Yes, I know it is much better to feed only wet but my cat really loves his dry stuff and only wet food isn't the most convenient for our family :)

Is it possible to feed more wet and less dry?  Simply changing the type of food rather than the number of calories / amount of food could help your kitty lose weight without him feeling hungry.  You don't have to completely eliminate the dry food!  Many of us feed some combination of wet/dry.

I would also advise feeding at least three meals a day.  If you're going with your vet's recommendation, try splitting the 1/3 cup of dry food into two meals.  Also, try to increase play time to more than 20 minutes a day, if at all possible.  Is he alone by himself for most of the day?

Can you be more specific about the foods you are feeding?  Also, are you talking about a 3 oz. can or 5.5 oz. can of wet food?  How heavy is your kitty?

I have summer classes so I don't think I'd be able to commit to more play time honestly. But he just lays down when he's done playing so I leave him alone. When not at university, my mom is always home. She is usually on the main floor but my cat doesn't go downstairs a lot.
The dry food I give him is Good Natured Grain-Free food (chicken flavoured) and he gets a quarter of a 3oz can (fish/ tuna flavoured).
I have tried to increase the wet food amount to half a can but he didn't eat it. I think I will increase wet food to 1/3 of a can.

The vet didn't say he was overweight or obese; just chubby. (He has a little belly)

He is 13.5 pounds... the vet said the most he should be is 12 pounds. It isn't too much of extra weight but I'm worried that he'll gain more weight since he sleeps and eats ever since he stopped going downstairs.

Before, he got more physical acitivity because his food was on the main floor and litter in the basement. Suddenly, he just stopped going down so we had to move everything upstairs. The vet told us to be patient and that something probably spooked him. I have made some progress... he has startes going down the stairs but doesn't dare step onto the main floor directly. If I take him down myself he jumps out of my arms and runs back upstairs. He doesn't go into the basement because he will have to get past the main floor first.

You might consider investing in some electronic cat toys for additional play time.  My two cats really love this one: http://www.target.com/p/smartykat-hotpursuit-concealed-motion-interactive-pet-toy/-/A-16604749

How much wet food are you feeding, exactly?  You didn't specify what size cans you are feeding.  Did you change the amount of dry food you were giving when you increased the wet food?

I didn't mean to suggest that your kitty was obsese when I sent that link.  It is just a good read for weight loss in general.  That said, 1.5 pounds of extra weight is a lot for a 12-pound kitty.
