I just made my first batch of the syrup.  It has quite a smell, a smell I think my 18 year old cat may well turn her nose up at.  Has anyone ever tried to make it out of home made, non salt, chicken broth?

And, can I make it  ahead,, freezee and thaw as neede?

Having trouble entering this is this site wondy today?

I've only ever made it with water, and the only smell I've ever noticed is almost a nutty smell.  I think it smells good.  Wonder if your SEB is old or something?  I've heard if it's not the "good stuff", but the outer bark it can be quite bitter and smell bad.

That being said, don't know why you can't make it with chicken broth, or why you couldn't freeze it and use it later.  Instead of making the syrup, I just make up the amount I need use then and there and feed it to my little beasties.  I just put a little bit in a small bit of water and let it gel up, which it does quickly.  Done!  Tried making the syrup and nothing was really different so why go to the bother, I say.  Plus I always had way too much to use up in 5 days.

Thanks @mrsgreenjeens   Since posting this I have discovered she will it eat.  It smells like the tree bark it is and I thought being a  picky old lady she'd turn her nose up at it.  Only one day though, she could still decide not to eat it.  But I got three doses into three meals into her yesterday.

No, I don't think it's old or bad.  I did read SEB obtained from cheap sources used outer bark and might be bitter and it should be inner bark and taste a bit sweet.  I wouldn't say it's sweet but it is not bitter.

I thought I should try the syrup becasue it adds liquid and getting adequate liquid into her is hard.

I don't think I can make it out of home made chicken broth after all.  The SEB syrup gels right up and with all the bones in home made broth, it does too.  It might actually turn out to be solid gelatin if I used my broth.  Hmmm, maybe I should try it anyway.

Awe, so you're talking bone broth!  Great stuff
.  I thought you were talking regular chicken broth, made from boiling up a chicken breast vs boiling up the bones until they "melt".

Well, moot point now since she's drinking the syrup.  With my old girl, I added at least a Tablespoon of liquid to every meal, and she ate 7 - 9 meals per day (very small meals)   She had kidney disease so didn't eat too much at a time.  Sadly, she didn't really care for my bone broth, darn it!  Was hoping she would love it

I am a huge fan of Slippery Elm Syrup.  I have only ever made it with water.  Funny you should mention bone broth; I have some cooking right now for my babies.  I'm glad she's taking it.  It helps so much with any GI issues or mouth issues.

My old girl has early stage kidney disease too.  And she is hyperthyroid and on special food for that, which I feed the canned version of.  She doesn't like the food though so I have to mix it with other food and I end up throwing a lot of it out.  And she gets the ear gel.   Yep, many small meals a day.

Bone broth, LOL,  I started the dog, this cat followed suit, on raw two years ago and went on a FB raw feeding page where they were all talking about bone broth.  What was this wonderful stuff, I wondered?  Soup stock, just like I'd been making for years and years.  Whatever is leftover from the carcass, bones, skin, bits of meat, the guts like kidney we won't eat, goes into my soup stock, aka bone broth.  :)  The cat likes it but she seems to get tired of having it every day.

Yes, soup stock!  People used to take it as medication and I have great faith in it.  But I, too, would get a bit tired of it every day.  lol

In case it helps anyone else, I have since made two batches out of homemade chicken stock.  It does gel up more then either the stock or the SEB do separately but I just scoop out a spoonful and nuke it slightly to liquify it.  Or I fed it to her in the gelled state and she ate that too, but I like it liquid to mix with the food so as to tempt her to eat more of the food.  And we have not had a constipation issue requiring Vet attention since I started using SEB.  Though I think she has had a couple of difficult times which she resolved herself.

Thanks for sharing.  This is good news, especially for cats who doesn't especially like the taste of SEB by itself.  I had a heck of a time getting any of my cats to eat anything with it in it.  Had to use the stinkiest cat food I could find, and then sometimes that wouldn't even work.

Glad this is helping resolve your girls constipation too
